As i'm using the V-Player builder for a future team, I got to thinking how these firing rates may work.

Treat the 100 skill cap as a 1-1 ratio of % of maximum value. Fire rate on an SA is say (up to) 50%. You have the activation skill at 100, that SA will fire 50% of the time. If you have that skill at 90, then 50% of 90 is 45, so now the skill has an fire rate of 45%.

When SA is bronze and say has a up to 10% chance, your activation skill is at 35, 10% of 35% is a fire rate of 3.5%, you picking up what i'm putting down?

any chance?!?!?!

afaik, that's just a popular theory that has never once been confirmed.

I'm also not sure how much I believe it considering how many SAs fire in rookie with low skill values and bronze SAs.

As to topic, I'm with Cuivienen on this one

Having the trigger skill above 80 doesn't guarantee reliability, but it makes it fire enough for me to think it was worth it. That's how I work it out. If the trigger skill is in the low 70s reliability drops massively, but I still see plenty of SA activity. I've a CB with Gold Tunnel Vision and only 38 Pass Rush Power, naturally TV fires quite rarely, but certainly 3 or 4 times per game (next time, I try to get more PRP into the build), but it's always worth it when it does

These are my subjective observations which bring us no closer to knowing, but anything we say regarding knowing what's going on amounts to Centaur & Gryphon Pie.

There are "Base" values to each players skill. It's a hidden number, but Bort has mentioned changing it.

What you see for your player's skill is in addition to the Base value to create the "real" value.

The thought from HayRow quoted above is the general thought on how SA's work.

As to Cuivienen's point, we see SA's fire a lot in Rookie even though the fire rate shouldn't be that high. The only explanation is that some SA's get a much higher number of chances to fire during a play than others.

It's the old Rate * Time = Distance word problem that most people hated in Math class.

Maybe. Or potentially instead of scaling from 0 to X, activation chance scales from half X to X, or similar.

I am one of the believers that SAs have the potential to fire on every tick or whatever duration of time interval it may have as long as the proper firing conditions are met. Closing speed and Mr. Reliable are prime candidates to support the theory as they will fire a ton. For closing speed every tick will provide a roll to see if the SA will fire as long as the defender is 10+ yards away from the ball carrier. Mr. Reliable has a 6 yard window to fire and depending on if your player is running vertically or horizontally can increase/decrease the chances to fire as you may spend more time within the 3 yard from LOS or 1st down marker requirement. Monster Hit probably only has 1-3 tick chances to fire as your defender approaches a ball carrier and goes in for the hit. First step can only fire when moving from a stop or being nearly stopped. Once again, you are talking about far fewer tick chances for the SA to fire.

I haven't done this in awhile, but I went through a few games of a WR with 60ish Quickness, and his Gold First Step (up to 50% fire rate) was firing about half the amount of Quickness. So if it's not a perfect correlation, then it's pretty close, or my sample size was too small.
