Obviously each is important, but which plays a bigger role for an LB built primarily as a blitzer?

For pure blitzers you can all but ignore footwork. It's all about MAX sprinting(90-100) and high quickness(60-80). Then cap blitz awareness and snap reaction.
Footwork comes into play when a defender is backpedaling...when covering the pass or when adjusting to make a tackle.

Also depends on whether you've got Spin Cycle or not. Footwork will help that fire so it will play a large role in that case.

I would not put footwork on a LB designed to blitz as a passer.

When I created him I figured he'd be blitzing primarily, but I've never really been a fan of one-dimensional players - don't want to be a liability on a crucial 3rd down or in the red zone.

Hmm, well what else do you want him to do? I'm assuming he's going to be blitzing the QB instead of dropping into coverage. So then he'd also be used against the run?

I'd still not work Footwork for the time being. Instead work on Speed, Power Tackling, Awareness (Man & Blitz), and then slowly bring up Quickness. As he continues to play, figure out what else you want him to do on your defense. For now, the increased Power Tackling will let him do fine against the run, as long as your not putting him spots for an o-lineman to pick him up.

I envisioned him being a really good blitzer (not great) with the ability to not get terribly burned by RBs coming out of the backfield and cover Jimmy Graham-type TEs reasonably well. Figured speed/quickness/awareness would keep him in the mix on running plays, but he was never supposed to be a thumper.

As far as his ultimate role, I don't actually own or run the team he's on so the way he's used isn't totally up to me. It was relayed to me by the Powers That Be that the team needed LBs, so I made a blitzer, a run stuffer, and a coverage guy. That being said, do I need a ton of PR Tech to get past blocking TEs?

No, if the TE is kept in for blocking, then he's not out running routes, so that's a win for the defense. Don't bother with PR Tech.

If you want him to cover Jimmy Graham type TE's (Superstars), then you'll need a crap ton of skills like Coverage Tech, Coverage Deflection, Man Awareness. Footwork would help as well...depending on where your LB will line up on passing plays.

Trying to be really good at both blitzing and coverage? There's not enough SP to go around for that. What you should do is open up his build, so we can see his skill caps and tell you what his potential is.

I have to say, it's a little late on the "no PR Tech" front . . .

Edit: Just built a new LB. I'm thinking this guy will be a little more effective in the long run, if only because I'm not wasting SP on PR Tech.

is it really necessary to go past 50 quickness for any player, at any position? I kinda feel like no.

Absolutely.

WRs need First Step which is powered by Quickness.

Belgarion is at 87. It's his highest skill.

More quickness seems to be total money on elusive RB's, but I've never built one, so I'm just guessing based on tape.

Quickness on blitzing LBs activates their best SA first step
