Sorry guys.. I almost ALMOST have my head wrapped around this.. Losts of thanks to Ted and his write up.. The question I have is this :

My opponent on first down passes 60% of the time and runs 40%

Of those plays 55% short passes and 45% Medium Runs 70% outside 30% inside mostly with 2 receivers

If I mark 1st down 100% for short passes 2 receivers and it covers most of his plays? I run a 3-4 and I have plays that match this along with zone and blitzing plays.. For each down you should have plays that will match your tactics I assume correct? short med long?

Also what are good distances?

I have
very short 1
Short 3
Med 6
long 12

Along those lines if it's 1st and 10 does the tactics try to go to med and long plays? I assume that's where you limit this with high percentages as I did above with marking short passes at 100%?

I think this is the last clue to this puzzle.. maybe.

As always thanks for everyone's help!

Firstly, I would say a lot of the plays in the 3-4 formation aren't great. Unless you're a very experienced co-ordinator, I would say relying on multiple formations is a must.

The tactics are ways to call the plays you want. What matters more to you here is putting the right plays in the defensive playbook. Saying you will run 100% short pass defense on first down means nothing if you do not tell us what that play call is.

You noted that the runs are mostly out of the 2WR formation. If your opponent doesn't pass out of the 2WR formation, you would want to put in some plays that tend to do better vs the types of runs your opponent will call.

Conversely, maybe when your opponent runs 3WR he only passes the ball. You would then want to use plays that stop the pass better than they stop the run.
