When you are not on a team (or in the offseason) - you can respec. That means you get back all of the skill points and special ability points that you spent during the previous season --- and you can respend them.
it allows you to correct a possible build mistake...or generally re-direct your player.
Could change a DE from run focus to pass focus / could get a LB to move some of his blitzing skills into coverage skills -- stuff like that.

Lot's of room for error here as opposed to classic. The meta in rookie was run for a while so a lot of teams would go all run in rookie then switch to balanced or passing in soph using respec.
