Can someone explain this game? What is the point of salary? I'm currently a journeyman FS, do I need to retire when I reach veteran? I'm very close to professional, should I use the skip ahead feature? Or does that hinder your player's performance?

Salary is just a way to dictate how many players a team can have on their roster. It just puts limits there...it doesn't mean anything for the player -- except a high salary gives a player a 25 heart bonus -- and a low salary limits a player to 50 chemistry.
You get 1 season at Vet.
If you've bought all your skill point boosts - you get an extra season at Vet.
Beyond that - you must buy career boosts to continue at Vet (can buy 2 seasons extra there).
Yes - you want to use the "skip ahead" right now - to get to professional or it will be tough to find a team.
It will shorten your players career by 2 games...not a big deal
