Does anyone know how tackling works?

What does the tech get compared to?
How does power figure in?
Does the grip get used when the tackle is 'successful' but the runner doesn't go down?

all are very important.

tackling tech helps with making the tackle overall and having a chance at power and grip to kick in. tackling tech is also the key to taking down elusive backs

tackling power is big for fumbles, but more important is the key to taking down power backs. you have to have some power to be able to tackle the power runners.

grip is a must, it will allow you to hold on to the rb if you dont take him to the ground. if you hold on then the rb is slowed down and other defenders can get there to help tackle.

so tech determines whether contact takes place, power determines whether or not the runner goes down and grip decides whether the tackler can hold on if the RB is still on his feet.

so the runner has lost some balance but not enough to go down, and subsequent tackle attempts reduces balance a little more each time?

not always, tackling tech still determines ability to take them to the ground

Stop confusing the situation man! Isn't It convoluted enough?

so power comes in if the tech roll doesn't get the guy down?

I figured that Power tackling was more for front on tackling, helping to pop the ball loose. Tech and grip are what makes you make a tackle and hold on.

Agree with doobas. Power tackling is for poping the ball loose and NOT for tackling power runners. If you watch power tacklers, they dive at the runner and can easily miss the tackle on a power runner. If you want to tackle a power runner, you better have very high tackle tech and grip.

But I'll find out in a few seasons. Vader and Boba Fett are the only run defending guys on my defense who will invest in power tackling. Everybody else is maxing tackle tech and grip.

Yeah Power Tackling may or may not help "bring down" a power runner specifically. What it will do though is slow down or even stop their forward progress when you're being dragged.

A guy with 25 power tackling but super grip will get dragged 30 yards downfield barely slowing down the powerback at all. A guy with 80+ power tackling will almost stonewall the powerback to a complete standstill. Assuming he didn't just get trucked right at the start because he failed the initial tackling tech roll to start a good tackle. All that stonewalling power tackling isn't much use either if you're at 20 tackling grip, and only able to hang on for a few ticks.

I had a whacky idea to try a defense with nothing but grip and strip techniques... to maximize the number of fumble rolls a ball carrier has to pass each play in order to not fumble

It'd probably fail horribly, but that one game it does what it's set out to do would be hilarious.

Strop tech is also really useful against power techs cause it can cause your players while they are holding on trying to tackle to cause fumbles

Yep, it's much more useful against any dot who doesnt immediately get taken to the ground.

In GLB1 Bort described strength helping the head on tackles while tackling helped more from the side. So I would make an assumption that Power and Tech play similar roles to that.

As everyone has said though. You need it all. There is no skimping by because superstars are just legit. I don't think you need to take everything to outrageous levels, but it definitely helps to have your safeties and LB's above 60 (but definitely want a guy or 2 in the pile with above 70) on those 2 and grip and Strip Tech won't hurt considering the carrying many backs will do.
