One thing I noticed watching all of this draft coverage:

when they show a great O lineman -- and they show him pancaking someone -- the pancake almost always involves the OT going down with and on top of the defender and holding him there.

Anyone ever seen that here? I assume no.

Why don't O Line have to pass a balance check when throwing someone down or else risk falling down as well?

Seems pretty unnecessary doesn't it? Unless you brought cut blocks over from GLB1. By the time most pancakes are made at the line the play is mostly past them. If there was a guy out there just pancaking 3-4 players with ease out there and that is why the run game was so crazy I could see a real need for this.

I do think a cut block SA, and consequently a cut tackle SA would be awesome. But those have been discussed in various ways in suggestions many times.

I do agree with txSteve though. Balance doesn't appear to be as important to some positions as it should be.

the key to the running game is generally getting a 2 for 1 somewhere (1 blocker takes out 2 defenders - 1 with a pancake and the other with an engaged block). Of course - HB's making someone miss or breaking a tackle effectively does the same thing.

It was just something that stood out seeing college o lineman highlights last night. don't think I ever saw a blocker pancake a guy...then go engage another guy. It was always a matter of going to the ground with the defender...and laying on him -- thus removing one defender -- and creating space for the play to proceed.

I don't expect anything to be changed here -- but would have been an interesting dynamic to introduce a few seasons ago when running probably did need a tweak down.

We could just introduce a balance check on pancakes for the OL.

Would have to make the defender stay on the ground too while the olineman was down or that would pretty much defeat the purpose of making it "realistic". Though I don't really like it because the SA's used to move post pancake aren't very widely used as it is.

Just make the Gold of that SA auto pass the balance check.

Maybe not just pass. I'd say a garunteed 50% of max would be ok. Otherwise I'd be worried the pure run teams would just have guys pancake 2 guys and be on their 3rd with a few lucky rolls.

I wonder how many folks over look the second effect from Beat Down SA that extends the downtime for a pancake victim. That's no small thing.

What else does it do? That's the reason I use it...

I know I was just joshin'. I do view the extended time on the ground as the biggest bonus to the SA. It also works on STs right? That's huge also.

Yeah, it's particularly useful on Special teams where pancakes are more likely, and the time on the ground is a big deal when it might let the returner have time to get past the player before they get up.

It makes STs a viable source of production. Also why Xavier has had 2 monster STs seasons in a row...
