Ok, so I thought I'd understood this 6 seasons ago, but I clearly don't. Xavori used to go on and on about it and I thought I'd sussed what was happening in defensive playcalling matters.

However, I clearly haven't sussed it at all...

Here is my First Down Defensive Tactic setting

Pass Short 55%
Inside Run 45%
Blitz 75%

I have
A Short Man Pass/Run play in the playbook
A Short Inside Run Man Blitz play
A Short Man Pass/Run Blitz play.

So - I have a play to match the call in the playbook for every formation.

Why then, is the sim calling 4-3 Weak LB Overload, a MEDIUM Man Pass/Run blitz play?
There is no call for a Medium anything in my 1st down defensive tactics.

Are the WR sets matching? The play selection group is driven by WR set 1st, not down and distance.

It's medium pass/run. That means it can be called any time inside or outside run is selected. For this scenario you had a 45% chance of inside run defense being called on first down, so it had a chance of being called on those 45% of first down plays.

Logically, you would think the short inside run play should take precedence over the pass/run play, but that's not how it works.

The only way to avoid that medium pass play from being called would be to put 100 in the short pass box for first down.

Rob is correct.

All Inside Run Blitzes (pretty sure) are all Pass Short plays too.

So you should be able to have this:

Pass Short 100 - Inside Run Blitz 45 - Blitz 75

Unfortunately, sometimes(all of the time?) all the above really does is call the Pass Short play and the Pass Short Blitz and never call the Inside Run.

Ahhh, ok. That makes sense, even though it makes no sense. To Clarify:

If an inside run is called by the RNG, it basically ignores 'distance' (Short/Medium/Long) and picks any play in the playbook for that formation (based on priority settings?) that has 'run' in its title?

I didn't know you could use the Inside Run category like 'Zone' (ie the row adds up to more than 100)

For the record, I don't mix them. It *should* work, but when I use Inside Run Blitzes I keep all of the Pass boxes at zero and just do:

Inside Run 100 - Blitz 100

lol at tactics confusion.

I set all of them 0 except blitz and zone and I set those at 50.

That way it does what ever is in my playbook I never have to touch tactics for defense

Oh how I wish Default Name actually did that.

Ok, I had a game yesterday where I tried:

Pass Short 100 - Inside Run 100 - Blitz 100 and my Inside Run Blitzes never fired even though there were multiple opportunities to do so.

So while all Inside Run Blitzes show "Short" in their description, they are not part of Short. They are essentially their own category.

Just do:

Inside Run 100 - Blitz 100 (the blitz shouldn't be necessary because they all are, but it's what I do).

Is it possible that the playbook had too many non-Inside only plays?

Your average defensive play will fire for both Inside and Outside run settings, if the frequency is too high, you might never see Inside only run plays.

No, I believe I had 3 plays total. Pass Short / Pass Medium / Inside Run.

When I want to Inside Run, I use the 0-100-100 setting. 0 being Pass Short.
