My one attempt at running a 3-4 Man D left me unimpressed.

Is anyone primarily running a 3-4 Man D and having success with it?

Assuming Trash Talk doesn't change much with the SA revamp (which may be a horribly bad assumption), shouldn't a well built 3-4 D with a Lawrence Taylor-type S* TT ROLB work well?

Let's discuss....

I say no because LBs have to be so specialized. So many traits for them to focus on... you'd have to have like 8 LBs with different specializations, and then play them all in the right spot for every game that it'd be impossible unless you wanted to sink a ton of extra time into game planning.

Just my take on that though.

I think it's usable, but the current set of plays from that formation are lackluster.

I've been meaning to ask this same thing - I was looking into it, but inside run D is (in real life) often an issue with one less DT, and my past few actual gameplans have been for inside running.

The big thing keeping teams away from it, I think, is the salary cap - DTs are a lot cheaper than LBs, so teams tend to organize around having a more affordable 4 man front.

I'm going to be trying the 3-4 OLB Blitz here soon, which is basically a 5-2 Man Base with LB's in place of DE's...which is good for Trash Talking

Otherwise I haven't used it.

I think if you built two olb with the sole purpose of trash talk and holding their own against the run it would work great. They could talk shit go at the qb and be essentially a faster de

I'm just curious if the Oline will be able to pick up the extra rusher with the DE not being there to require blocking.. It would require the guard have some skills in quickness/footwork... We'll see

3-4 is incredibly prone to being run on between the tackles. Slams and dives eat that shit up.

there just needs to be a better variety of plays. There aren't any 3-4 plays with the safetys in man coverage outside of the big blitzes, and the plays that have 1 LB blitzing are pretty similar except for the fact that they have a different LB blitzing on every play. So you can't use multiple of those if you have 1 blitz specialist OLB that you would want blitzing on every play.

I use 1 or 2 of the plays pretty regular but never have a gameplan where i am running majority 3-4 plays.

Do the DEs always engage the tackles or do they sometimes engage the guards?

tackles. C on the NT. Leaves the guards to get to the second level and block the ILBs...

Generally, no. 5 LB's is just enough. Focusing on where and when to put points in to what is the tricky part. But if you do it just right, it should work out just fine. But that's just me. May be why we are 11-8. But it is working for us overall.

I was thinking about restarting and running a 3-4 zone defense. Now that would be tough to pull off.
