title say it all. it would be nice to be able to have 4 lbers in a nickle defense.

You can already put your LBs in at DE to simulate the formation you are after by just playing the standard 4-2-5 nickel. A new formation just to avoid OOP penalties probably isn't going to happen.

I'd rather get the 4-2-5, with 3 safeties first. That's a base defense that's common enough.

I've never heard of a formation with 3 safeties.

3 deep zones, yes, but its usually an LB or CB taking one or two of those deep zones. Is it more of a college/high school thing to have 3 safeties?

FWIW you can just plug in a FS at CB in nickel and thats basically the same thing, so the option already kind of exists.

4-2-5 is a very popular defense nowadays, especially in college. 4 DL, 2 LB, 2 CB, 2 SS, 1 FS.

ya watch the saints the broncos. ya pretty much tehy are putting safetys in the NB spot to deal with the spread and stop running better vs it. i mean if you haven't seen it much you haven't been watc hing football. they have been doing it sense the days of farve and elway in the SB. i know for a fact the GB defense ran 3 Safety alot then. and now some teams do to such as the broncos and the saints. see how mucht esaints has vaccarro lined up in slot

You can put a safety in as your nickel back in GLB2 to the same effect.... in my opinion when the guy is playing like that he isn't playing safety hes playing nickel back. he just happens to be a guy with an S next to his name on the roster sheet instead of CB.

except its a base defense. Not just a 3WR defense. A well run 4-2-5 gives up nothing against heavier sets against the run relative to heavier defensive looks.

Probably the best example. If you google 4-2-5 defense, this is the first thing that pops up.
