Its currently hard to realize when you get a new PM because the number just changes from 0 to 1. I wish it turned a bright color like when someone sends you a message through chat. Its impossible to miss when you get a chat message but easy to miss when you get a PM. My specific solution is to make the letter icon (letter as in the thing you get in the mailbox) and number icon slightly larger and when you get a PM the letter and number turn yellow, or whatever the chat icon color is. That way it is easier to see when you get a PM, but it isn't a big annoyance on the screen.
