I've made the assumption that you won't get matched up against teams you're a coach (GM, OC, DC etc) of. Could explain some of the ridiculous repeated match ups at the top of the ladder.

And we played TTs team a ton of games in a row where bhall is tagged as the DC (even if he doesn't play that role).

So that's clearly not a factor.

The Goat ranchers played the same team 3 times in a row in ladder.

I'm now at the point after tomorrow I've played 2 teams 3 different times each in ladder as a soph...

why not have me against a seasoned team or lost lounge, a fellow soph with only a few spot diff in ladder ranks?

I do not understand the ladder logic at all

Sophomore ladder code prolly has something like

If TeamName == "Lost Lounge"
Opponent = "Zorp";

So, I wouldn't hold your breath

The issue in sophomore is that we've only got a couple teams within 10 ranks of us typically. It's worse for the top 5 than the 5-15 guys. You've literally got 2 possibilities most ladder matches.

Yeah man. Rookie teams play Sophomores, why not extend the logic up to Sophomores playing Seasoned. Oh wait...that would just create a lot of whining amongst Sophomore owners who are not at the top.
