Seems to me that this is beneficial to just about every build type, backing up and sideways movement being key in blocking, tackling, and carrying.

But am I wrong?

I'm under the same impression.

It's definitely helpful, but I've found it most important on ball carriers. You can get away with not investing in it on blockers.

Really? Seems like it would be quite useful for pass blocking, not so much for run blocking. No idea how good it is for, say, CBs and safeties. Not sure if they spend time backpedaling before "turning the hips" or not.

The o-line vs d-line mechanics are in such a way that speedy d-line don't Julius Dee around blockers, which makes footwork less important. The largest factors for blocking are related to the skills tied to holding the blocks. SAs like Spin Cycle are pretty nasty.

yet one of the key components of Spin Cycle is stated as footwork?

Was talking strictly blockers with my previous post.

I think part of the problem is that so few people were trying to manipulate the system on the test server than groupthink started to take over. Footwork wasn't considered important so everyone shied away from it. Now that this is being tested "in the wild" we'll see how right (or wrong) the most active testers were.

Because saying footwork isnt a really important skill for blocker because speedy DE don't go around the blockers makes footwork a useless skill for DE?

Not a criticism. Its what testers do. If you're not breaking stuff you're not testing right.

I just know the active test group tested a lot of build variations, footwork included. Not taken as a pot shot, I just don't agree with the group think and everyone shying away from footwork.

Fair enough. I was under the impression there were only 5 or so people who were considered active testers. I'm not fond of that classification because, especially early, I know there were more. If there were significantly more than 5 or so active testers then you're probably right.

But it was still in a very contained environment.

There were like 2-3 "active" teams at every level. Then it quickly became "what works against the best of the three teams is the best".

If by active you mean vocal in the last ~3 weeks of testing, yes. Guys like Gman logged in but didn't post much at all.
