Can't Bort just make it so players on teams can't be retired? Or did they get rid of that so people who wouldn't check are just immediately eliminated.

What happened, at least what we think happened, was that the player had joined the team when it was CPU, then retired (since you can retire while on a CPU team), and he didn't get cut because that function call was removed at one point.
