This season, I won a Silver league with a no-no team, won the NBNC title for the 2nd season in a row, and won the Pee-Wee Gold championship, all mainly on the strength of my defense. So what's the secret to my success...offensive patterns of the teams I played were too easy to find!
Through scouting, if I was able to determine the offensive patterns of the team I was to face, I was able to tweak my defense so it would stop most of those patterns. And it wasn't like I spent hours scouting, most of these patterns were found within the first 15 min...
Here are just some of the patterns I found during the playoffs...
1. Well defined run & pass patterns like always rush when it's 2nd & 0-6, 3rd & 0-4, 4th & 0-2, pass the rest. This makes it easy for me to know which defensive plays to call and when.
2. Players who are almost always used for a certain type of play, like always run the ball when a RQB is in, always pass it when a receiving TE or Scat HB/FB is in, etc. Just like #1, this makes it easy for me to know which defensive plays to call and when.
3. Call only a specific type of play from a formation. For example, if you only ever pass out of a certain formation, I know to which type of defensive play to call, no matter what the situation is.
4. Call a small number of plays a high % of the time. If you do this, it's easy for me to adjust my defense to counter mainly those plays a team calls most often. If I am able to shut down 80% of your favorite plays, it's unlikely you will score big with the remaining 20%.
Moral of the story...mix things up!!!
