Game of the Week:
To blitz or not to blitz? That is the question. Let's take a look at the good and bad of blitzing by examining a key play or two for the Buda Pests, one of the best blitzing teams in GLB history (aside from the late/great SoCal BDC). Buda and ESL had the most exciting dotball match ups from Week 10 as the Pests built up a 24-7 halftime lead. But ESL made a dramatic comeback to tie the score in regulation and win it in overtime.

I did not see too many Buda blitzes in the first half. But on ESL's only first half TD, I did see this nice use of the screen to stop a blitz:

Buda 24 - ESL 7

The third quarter starts. After a three and out ESL gets the ball. Buda blitzes, ESL goes to the WR screen out of the single back set. Result? 51-yard pickup:

Later in the 3rd ESL gets a pick. This wasn't a blitz, but a screen vs. a 6-DL front caught my eye and setup another TD:

Buda 24 - ESL 21

Lots of punts and sacks by DE's when rushing only three and we fast-forward to the 4th quarter. Apparently a screen is not the only way to beat a blitz. On 3rd and 6, the TE and HB stay in to block with all three LB's coming. Chief Justice Warren connects with Just a stranger amongst us for 26-yards to setup the game-tying FG:

Buda 24 - ESL 24

In overtime, after trading punts (great defensive effort by both teams) ESL takes over at their own 30 and drives all the way to Buda's 32. Now Buda had not blitzed a single-time on this drive. I don't blame them for trying to get a sack on a 2nd and 10 to try and push ESL out of FG range. But when the blitz came, it was another WR screen, Warren hit Gold Bug for a 32-yard game-winning TD:
