does anyone know I was planning to assign spies and up the run def % other than that what to do?

For casual, you need to think of it this way:
1) Inside Run Defense Stops Inside Runs
2) Short Zone Defense stops Outside Runs
3) M2M stops passes.
So you have to sort of look at their tendencies and adjust your tactics so that instead of calling many outside run stopping plays, those percentages are over in the short zone percentages.
For teams with a rushing QB, set a QB spy for MLB, LILB, RILB and FS (and possibly SS if he's fast). I usually do about 30-60% for each with a max 1. Never ever spy guys on the outside because he won't get across the field on plays where the QB goes the other way.
Never set your defense to auto adjust (unless you are up against a team that almost only passes - which is rare). If you turn it on, it'll start calling more outside run stopping plays, which of course will not stop the run and they'll get even more yards and it'll call even more and - well, you get the picture.
The big trick is to not go too heavy on anything. If you overestimate a percentage in one area, they are going to be able to get yards doing something else.
