Watch Thread
You can be notified when someone replys to or posts a thread or topic in a forum by alert or email.
Basis of my idea at first, was to select a thread that you post in, if you want to alerted of a reply, if you don't want to be alerted don't select the option. There has been other good points brought up in this thread after it was selected to be voted on, that I would like to ad to the overall idea.

Admittedly I dont know much about sever strain, but I dont see how having would cause more server strain, but if it does then whatever keeps the site from lagging...

Click on TW for list of links to threads you are watching and then navigate to threads you want to check up on from there. It doesnt have to be forum-like as I suggested earlier. Could also have a "Watch" button in the thread like this...

Clicking watch would put that link in your watch list so that you may return at that point in the thread.
I just see the alert thing being really annoying when you are posting a bunch in a thread that you are also watching.
I was thinking of a quick alert or email, to the reply after the one you made, that would bring you back to the thread, you can select to watch the reply under yours, so you can see a reply to the reply after yours.
Beenlurken had a good idea of being able to tag a thread, so it shows up in a tab labeled watched threads, I this would be a good addition, you can either just watch the thread to see if someone replies to it, and/or watch the whole thread.
A) You would only get an alert to your reply (this would help so your aren't inundated with extra alerts)
B) You can tag the whole thread, that will show up under a tab on your homepage.
C) You can select both options
