What should I work on to make my guy better. I am working on a building a hard-hitter but don't want to be a liability in coverage. I am working on my speed right now, but what else should I work on.

Looks like you have your equipment upgrades too spread out, and you SA tree is pretty built already for a 17.

Personally, strength is important for FFs, but you need speed to get there. I like to keep strength at least 20 below speed at all times.
Your tackling doesn't need to be addressed for a while, pouring some into vision never hurts.

There aren't any proven "good" builds anyways.

Settle down kids... As one of the higher leveled safeties here i'll weigh in. jtoj is right though. You need more strength than hard hitter abilites at this point. Confindence helps, i'm currently working on getting mine up.

i put to many in into specials early, so ive been doing pure stats for the past 6 levels, im thinking of raising my agility

I'd put 5 points into speed. That's most important IMO. If you can afford it (I doubt it though) I'd put all equipment into one skill (speed).
