So with the recent flaming about the WR1 and FB Screens being over powered... I did a little scouting on the top 16 teams in World League from Alpha and Zeta.

In particular I ran Borts scout tool on both the offense and defense of the top 16 teams in WL, and compared their effectiveness at making positive gains out of the Single Back WR1 screen and Strong-I FB screen, as well as stopping them defensively.

Note, I ran the test for the first 17 weeks for each team (16 regular season games and 1st playoff game). I ignored preseason and lolscrims.

Here are the results:

WR1 Screen does have an 8yd avg in WL for the top 16 teams... That is pretty effective - and possibly OP'd. But when you look at the defensive side... There are teams that have shown they can limit it's effectiveness. So I have mixed feelings about it.

The toughest thing for me as a DC is that in order to really limit the effectiveness of the WR Screen - you need to use the RDE out in the flat. That seems kind of strange to me - that a FS or ROLB can't effectively make a stop - if they are dedicated to that zone / area / WR1 coverage.

Thus, if you really want to shut the WR1 screen down, then you need to allocate the RDE to the play. Given that Single Back is already a passing formation - and you have multiple DB's on the field - and most likely playing a 3man front - when you put the RDE out into the flat. It basically welcomes any running play for your opponent. Thus leaving your defense very vulnerable to a team that can run the rock.

So while the WR1 screen can be stopped - in order to really stop it... You are pretty much gambling that the team will not be able to pick up positive yards on the ground out of the Single Back formation. Teams that have Power WR (at WR1) - and an above average rushing attack - can literally mind fuck a DC by going back and forth with the WR1 Screen and Weakside Slam. There is no way a defense can stop both plays effectively without getting beat up in the process.

Why did I decide to be a DC - and not an OC in GLB?? FML

yah, but inside running is so bad, and sb running in general is so bad, that the RDE in the flat doesn't hurt much.

well, iirc Indy was running a 5 CB set with 3 CBs strong side, so there was literally no one there to stop the weak slam when the RDE vacated.

Nice data.

Fixing the catch location is the main problem. I don't know when it changed, but no one used WR screen for the longest time precisely because it wasn't always overpowered. Requiring the RDE to spend every Singleback play in the flat is not a reasonable solution, and it takes the game away from being a football simulation.

Yeah, remember when you used to insist that TE audible was garbage and I convinced you to try it? No need to fight, I love you man.

I didn't say it was garbage...I. said I was not sure of it to be reliable. As I hadn't used it much at that point.

fwiw, the TE+HB audibles were on for Odessa vs Providence game this season and didn't fire once vs SB because of where your ROLB was placed. it's useless against CB/S blitzes and doesn't work if the LB is far enough off of the LOS. works well against the standard overload blitzes though.

i thought the screen pass was supposed to slow down the pass rush....if you have to send an extra guy into coverage does it not accomplish its intended purpose?

oh wait you want to glitch blitz with no worries of any play working. Then stroke your ego because you think your defense is good.
