that's what three straight shutouts and a solid offense will do

We allowed a FG this week and have had, in my opinion, a tougher opening schedule. We're looking forward to a good game vs. El Fuego later on

He's also got Tasmania under FPQA and the Bandits and Redscape under Cimmeria. If I had to guess I'd say strength of roster wasn't considered at all and it's 100% based on stats and points scored.

Interesting way of doing things, but very volatile at the beginning of the season.

These rankings will really stary to sparkle at the end of the season once everyone's played each other, for the most part.

This is fantastic: two ranking systems. Kind of like the AP and the Coaches' Poll. Makes for some lively debates around here. Thanks, DSF, for the very statistical approach. Very good stuff.

Sarg, are you talking about the opponent strength that week, or the strength of schedule overall? Strength of schedule overall would not work in the situation like this, as we only play one out of conference game. Everyone else plays the same people. Your strength of schedule would be maybe .10 of a point higher than the next guy because you are slated to play the #1 team in your league. If that's the case, Zeta conference might beat out Alpha in the list due simply to the fact that it would give you points based on 4 Alpha teams still remaining undefeated and only 3 Zeta's.

Please tell me if I am losinig something in translation here.

I am dabbling on a different type of game winner predictor for GLB based largely off stats, but also taking in to account morale, etc. Hopefully I will have some tenative data before our next game.

BTW, nice season you guys are putting together down there in Zeta... give 'em hell & thanks for you help on that spreadsheet.

Can somebody help out a n00b here please? What do all the numbers mean? And how can I use them to better plan my next game?

Ah, nevermind. I finally found the info I was looking for:

ooh.. well, i'll give you the down and dirty version.. Mr. Toberich would not be happy if I gave out the total formulas for his "picks", but he'll let me give out the down and dirty for the rankings... but he has let me give out this much of our "ancient" chinese secret...

And I'll use Brantford for the example:

1 Brantford Mustangs 720 8170 11.34722222 1 60 5083.5 84.725 1 1

Column 1: Overall Ranking - is the ranking number.
Column 2: Team Name - even easier column
Column 3: Total Points Scored
Column 4: Total Yardage Gained - This includes passing, rushing, returns, and a few other numbers (there are some penalty numbers in here as well.. but I'll let you guess as to what counts as penalty numbers).

Column 5: OYPP - Yards Needed to get 1 point.

Column 6: OYPP Ranking. The less yards you need to score a points, the better. Brantford would by their number of 11.34, only have to get 68.04 yards before they'd very likely have 6 points on the board.

Column 7: Defensive Points allowed: How many points did they give up total?
Column 8: Defensive Yards Allowed: How many yards did they allow?
Column 9: DYPP: how many yards You will have to go before this team allows 1 point to be given up. Therefore a higher number is better.

So Brantford last season had a 84.725 DYPP. You'll have to therefore get 508.35 yards before you'd score a TD against the Mustangs. (that's why they got elevated to #1 almost immediately after joining the Pro, cause nobody defensively is close to them at the moment.)

Column 10: Defensive Rankings

Colunn 11: Final rankings (again, this is very simple: OYPP Rank + DYPP Rank /2)

Note: that when I give you guys the "pick 'ems" (which won't start til week 3), there are a LOT more numbers I use when doing the wins/losses pick 'ems. So you could some teams that are lower in rankings get some upsets..

DSF uses a great ranking system, but it is kind of meaningless until enough games are played and it is even more volatile in a league like this where teams are still recruiting.

The rosters are not factored in at all and is purely based on performance at this point.

The supposedly unstoppable Thorny Devils are perfectly content at third for now.

This is a marathon not horeshoes and hand grenades, Two in the bush is gross, People who live in glass kitchens shouldn't throw black kettles, Not how you finish, it is how you perform somewhere in the middle, There are more then nine ways to skin a dead cat, the Thorny devils are going to give 110% to making up statistics 50% of the time.

Melbourne cant be considered first, we wouldnt have anything to shoot for..besides its more fun toppling the person on top.

Yeah, we're still scratching our heads over that one too. But as they say, "On any given Sunday..."

I agree with wesley, any system like this gets more valid as the season goes on and strength of schedule balances out.

He has been posting all of the rankings throughout Oceania in one thread on the main Oceania page.

The Blaze are #1 in our conference in his rankings and #2 in the UNCLE rankings, which is a meaningless, but fun ranking of all the teams regardless of division.
