The area I am in is full of old people, so possibly, though they all pretty much seem to disavow anything WW2 related. In fact I was told I can't even talk about it out here.

Actually Nazis are not allowed to practice in Germany but they are allowed in America, a little Ironic.

Land of the free, baby! Although when you say practice, here that means hold meetings and lemonade stands...in Germany it had quite a different meaning.
Bice, I hope you make friends out there. Drink them under the table!

bice,
I was an exchange student who lived in Germany for 3 months (up in Bremen / Bremerhaven an der Nordsee ). Towards the end my family came over and we visited our relatives in the lowlands. Dutch heritage with some distant relatives in belgium as well.
What you say is very true about WW2 related things. I guess I can't blame them much. It is a very ugly thing that is extremely shameful and embarassing to most of them. The term reprehensible doesnt even begin to cover thinking you can take over the whole world due to your genetic superiority and wiping out millions of "unpure" in the process.
Also interesting was that our dutch and belgian relatives were still holding the grudges that the germans were afraid to acknowledge. They were very much still sore about having been occupied and what germany had tried to do / accomplished. And they were not shy about it at all.

Hey I heard Germans never fly their flag, why is that? IS IT BECAUSE YOUR FLAG IS UGLY?
ANOTHER FUN FACT FROM GEANDILY: Americans are one of the least patriotic first world countries!

I see a lot of German flags on cars, but I think it's Americans trying to blend in

It depends on what part of America you are in, and to be frank it also has alot to do with political lines. Although as a whole I would have to agree that America is less patriotic then other countries.
On the original topic ive always wanted to visit Germany, the bulk of my heritage/family is from Germany as well. I took three years of German in high school and my teacher who was a native german was always very open about ww2. We would watch Schindlers List and a couple of other war related films every year in class. Perhaps she just felt defensive about the whole issue and wanted to prove her innocence despite the fact that it had all happened before either of us were born, but she certainly also had some unique insight to offer us on the subject as well.
Are you an American living there for the military/work/school gtbice or were you born there gtbice?

My cousin is stationed in Northern Italy and his wife's family lives in Germany. Met her over there like 15 years ago when he was stationed in Germany. She hates it when when they go to visit her family, her brothers always take him to the bath houses. lol

Thanks for your service! Had some family members swing through for a few weeks returning from the middle east. Again, I appreciate the sacrifice your making for our country. So how are the women where you are at?
