Are we going to see some play action/ fake hand-off plays in the near future? One of my very few complaints is that there is no real incentive for building a QB that scrambles. Not a runner like Vince Young, but an outside the pocket thrower like Jay Cutler.

There has been zero discussion on it, but I would love to see some play action, myself. I feel we DEFINITELY need to fix a lot of issues within the sim, add some reads for players (instead of a vision check to know exactly what play it is), and add the ability to actually have players bite on fakes properly.

When I was a tester I tried repeatedly to get QB runs removed in place of PAPs, boots, and rolls.

The QB runs are redonkulous.

I would kill for PAP's, and for it to actually work how Staz suggested instead of what it currently does.

I don't know if Bort wants to do it tho? (been brought up a bunch of times, might be to hard to code???).

Play action plays could work in a simple manner. Once play starts sim checks defender personal tactics. If they favor the run then they have a vision penalty. If the favor the pass they get a vision boost.

There could also be a defensive ai setting that play the run, play the pass, or play balanced.

Or a combination of both.

No, I don't think I like this. The only reason a play action works is because the offense has run successful run plays prior. If the defense is shutting down the run, and the offense just isn't running, a PA won't be effective.

There needs to be a setting within the sim where defenders are more likely to fall for draws/passes due to the fact that they begin to focus in on a certain type of play, and not just rely on their basic tactics that were set before the game even started.

I think keeping the runs in, and adding PA would be nice. Although there are MANY things, like I mentioned, that need to be added into the game before we can do PA. Then, I'd imagine there would need to be a Play Action special ability (not VA) for Quarterbacks.

A successful run play counter could be entered as well. Things could be normal at 0 run plays and grow more difficult as more successful run plays are run.

In football it's a combination of both. There's what the defense expects, and what the defense's initial responsibilities are. Every defensive player has a role to play the instant the ball is snapped. In most normal situations the linebackers play the run as they read the play, then switch to their pass defense assignment if they read pass. Cornerbacks usually play the pass first, then switch to their run defense assignment if they read run. Of course there are usually adjustments for long and short yardage situations.

In a game players tend to make their own adjustments based on what's happened previosuly. If the offense has been passing a lot and the tight end's been getting some quick releases the linebacker may change his stance or position or try to make some contact to slow him down. If the offense has been running well the 'backers may cheat in to be in a better position to stuff the running lanes.

It doesn't take long to make a read and react, but half a second too long or a couple of yards out of position and the advantage is with the offense. The purpose of play action and draws, therefore, is to force the defense to either make the wrong read, or to get them to hesitate.

Running is least successful when the defense expects a run, and is playing the run first.
Play action is most successful when the defense expects a run, and is playing the run first.
Passing is least successful when the defense expects a pass, and is playing the pass first.
Draws are most successful when the defense expects a pass, and is playing the pass first.

In GLB for play action to work there needs to be a vision check for defenders to read the play. That check should be affected by both their focus for that play, and what an offense has done previously. The defender could take too long to read a play and have to play catch up. The defender could make the wrong read and be out of position. The defender could also be all over the play reading it from the start, stuffing an expected short yardage run or covering a receiver on an expected pass play.

I thought that's what on the run was supposed to be for

Solid post Barnzie. Add, I've gone back in during the past few days and looked at hundreds of pages on the Suggestions forum to find some of my old threads. It's tedious, but Cntrl+F, type in your username, and if you started a thread on that page, it'll bring you to it. Click the next page, click "Next" on the search and keep going.

First off, there's no way in hell i'm taking 30+ minutes looking for 4 or 5 of my posts.

And second off?

I agree, it's a pain in the ass (forum search, anybody?) but I like knowing where my ideas are to refer to them.

I've been wondering for a long time why we don't have a search function...
