Ok the middle linebacker was set man to man on the HB. Is there a way to set the SS to cover the HB if he goes strong and the FS if he goes weak. I know when you create a custom defensive play it gives the option to cover the HB strong or HB weak but I alwasy assumed this referred to where they set up in a formation not a pass route. Anybody know for sure?

yup

you select HB strong and HB weak for whoever you want to cover him. Strong and weak refers to what side of the formation you will cover HB if he goes on a pattern

That. The only problem with it is when a formation has the HB and the FB going the same way - then one ends up uncovered or someone needs to cross a lot of field.
Thankfully, there aren't many plays like that, and they aren't common.

Flip the order of your safety coverage. If you have a LB covering the HB and only the HB, have the safeties look at the FB on their side first, then look to the HB on their side.

When I looked I think there was only play where they went out on a route on the same side and that was weak side so all you have to do to cover it is:

Defensive player 1: HB Strong / FB Strong / HB Weak
Defensive Player 2: FB Weak / HB Weak

That way the HB & FB are covered even if they go out on a route on the same side. Next season the new plays could see both FB & HB going out strong side so you would need:

Defensive player 1: HB Strong / FB Strong / HB Weak
Defensive Player 2: FB Weak / HB Weak / FB Strong

I tend to go with

Defensive Player 1: HB strong> FB strong > Zone or blitz depending on the defense
Defensive Player 2: HB weak> FB weak > Zone or blitz depending on the defense

My reasoning is that there are not many plays that send the HB and FB on a route to the same side. If I pick up on this in my scouting I will adjust. Otherwise I try to reduce the total amount of reads by any one player.
