Now that we’ve been eliminated, I want to thank everyone for such an enjoyable and competitive season. Here are some thought I had during the season but never wanted to post anything. First, I didn’t want anything I posted to be used against us. I’m paranoid like that. Second, some of these include situations where there were AI mistakes. It happens to everyone. I don’t post them at the time because I don’t want to come off as a whiner and I don’t want to detract from anyone’s fresh win. The wins aren’t so fresh anymore so here goes…..
Toughest Match-up for the Wolves: Seville Scranton Golden Eagles.
Of the 5 losses we had this season, there were only 2 that I looked back on and couldn’t really find things that I could change the 2nd time around. Amazingly enough, our loss to Bow Street was the first. The second was our loss to Seville Scranton. I know what they were going to do and planned for it, they did what I thought they would and were still successful. Heck, they were even more successful doing it the second time around in the play-offs. I tried to be more aggressive against the run, but it didn’t help at all. Of course, if we had kept our HB passes in from the 1st game, it would have been closer since they still don’t defend against it.
Bone-headed Offensive Game for the Wolves: Sarajevo Horde Zla
The night before the game, one of our Offensive guys is talking up the new package he has ready for the Sarajevo game. The next day, after a 23-14 loss where we outgained them by a bit, he’s like, “uh, where were my plays????” Sure enough, the little box to use the offensive AI wasn’t checked. We played Sarajevo with the basic offense. Does Trondheim win if that box is clicked? There is no way to know for sure, but I think it may have been a game changing move.
Bone-headed Defensive Game for the Wolves: Thunder Bay Aggies
I had a team that played these guys last season. The Aggies won but it was very close and the other team is one that the Wolves have crushed in each of the past two seasons in scrimmages. I didn’t see the Aggies game as a gimme, but I was confident enough to install a completely new defense. The defense was horrible, the LBs played zones that were a lot deeper than I expected allow Thunder Bay to rush and pass underneath all day long. I knew they’d go to their TE a lot and I thought I had the zone set where he’d be picked up when he passed through, but the LB dropped back on the WR leaving the TE wide open. Does Trondheim win if I use my usual approach to defense? I’m pretty confident we would have, but who knows.
