Not much happened in week 13. The only game that could be speculated on was the Windy City Bears vs. the San Jose Baggers. Many in the league would have called this game a no brainer. I, however, felt the game could be won with some clever game planning. (possible bias) Call it lucky, call it good planing, call it what you will, the game is in the books and the playoff picture hasn't really changed. There was one really close game between the Salukis and the Nobles. A Saluki loss would have eliminated them from the post season and cleared up the playoff picture quite a bit, however, they survived the game and we have to wait until next week to get some real clarity. The game to watch is the Austin Pirates vs. the Piggies. As reported last week, this game is huge in terms of playoff implications, not so much for the teams involved, but the implications of this game carry forward into several of the tie breaking scenarios for the other teams.
Essentially, the magic number is 10. You get 10 wins, you go to the playoffs. But there are two scenarios where a 10 win team has to stay home. In order for their to be a 10 win team stay home, the piggies must win. In which case it is possible for the Piggies, Baggers, Pirates, Tigers and Vets to finish with 10 wins.
If this happens the first tie breaker would sort the teams like this.
Piggies win 3
Pirate win 2
Baggers win 2
Vets win 2
and the Tigers would go home with a 10-6 record having only won one of the games in the first tie breaker.
BUT WAIT. What if the Windy City Bears lose their last two games and finish 10-6 as well. They still make the playoffs easily because the won 3 of the first tie breaker games, but they lost to the Baggers and the Tigers. Now the Tigers will have won 2 tie breaker games and it would require a second tie breaker to pick the final playoff spots.
Pirates would likely make the playoffs with 304 pts scored
But we have a real contest between the Vets and the Tigers each scoring 256 points. I have to believe this favors the Tigers because they play two cupcakes to finish the year and the Vets have a very tough game against the Amsterdam Dirty Dozen.
So, if you are a Tigers fan and think your two easy games will give you a 10-6 record and a trip to the playoffs, you had better start hoping the pirates beat the piggies to eliminate any chance of a 10-6 tie between these teams. And should the Piggies win, you had better pray that the Redskins watched the game between the Baggers and the Bears and picked up a few pointers on how to play crazy wicked defense, or you will be holding the trophy for best record to not make the playoffs.
Next week, we will know just about all there is to know in regards to our playoff picture. Since I like drama, I am certainly hoping for a Piggies win.
