Well folks, the storied rivalry continues this week in the Alpha Conference Game of the Week, Torpedo Cowthorpe vs. East Cairo Argonauts. These two widely reknowned teams first locked horns in week 16 of season 6. Those who were around this forum last season know how heated things got between Torps owner mattlee123 and ECA gameplanning phenom mcgovern10 before/after their regular season matchup.
Game 1 (season 6): Torps 17, ECA 3 http://goallineblitz.com/game/game.pl?game_id=257365
In both teams' innaugural season, the Torps ended the Argos' last-minute playoff hopes in a heart-breaking week 16 for ECA fans. ECA was the 2nd-hottest team in the conference at that point, having won 5 of their last 6 games with their sole loss to the eventual conference champion Natural Born Killers.
The Torps stuffed ECA's running attack and held their offense to a mere 111 yards on the day while Torpedo stud HB MicroLab3* racked up over 200 all-purpose yards on the hapless Argos.
*readers will chuckle when they realize Torpedo replaced MicroLab3 w/ Wilson W. Wilson, Jr. An off-season move that cost the Cowthorpe quite a bit of fan support
The Torps ended up going deep into the 3rd round of the playoffs where they lost, surprise surprise, to the Natural Born Killers before getting promoted.
Game 2 (season 8): ECA 52, Torps 10 http://goallineblitz.com/game/game.pl?game_id=398228
Mad shit-talking hyped this game to epic proportions, but Game 2 was anything but a back-and-forth battle as the East Cairo Argonauts trounced the loud-mouthed Torps and then, according to rumor, buried the Torpedo team bus in the East Cairo desert. The team's cheerleaders were not seen or heard from after, and it is unclear to this day whether they were buried in the bus or if the Argos' players laid claim to them.
The Cowthorpe could not stand up to the ravagery that defines the ECA running game, and gave up 255 rushing yards on 70 carries. In fact the brutality of that day was a season-breaker for then-undefeated Cowthorpe, sending them into a tailspin as they lost 4 of their next 6 games.
The Cowthorpe would go on to narrowly make the conference playoffs but suffered an early first-round exit at the hands of the Passion Fruits. ECA's season collapsed before their very eyes and they missed the playoffs despite starting the season with a 9-2 record.
OFFICIAL LINE: ECA 52, TORPS 33
OVER-UNDER: 85.5
