i ventured in the main GLB forum and there were guys arguing about whether realism was ruining the game. they all liked season 6 with the inflated stats. they liked the DE with 90 sacks stuff and WR's with 5000 yards, etc.

this year all the stats are down. even the players with a lot of stats usually have a giant stat portion in one to two games.

i am pretty sure i know the answer already, but what do you prefer:

the realism of this year or the stats of previous seasons?

I personally like this year. As a coordinator things are just more even, the Jacks are winning strongly, but don't doubt I'm putting in my time gameplanning each game. In seasons past a good DE or two could kill an offense almost single handedly.

I can see where players themselves might like inflated stats... but if your player is on the receiving end of the uber other player it isn't much fun either....

Stats are more realistic from the standpoint that they are approaching the mean, but I wouldn't say the game is better. The implementation of the custom offensive and defensive AIs seems broken this season where it didn't seem to be in the past three or four seasons. It looks like FB run block pathing has broken during the season. Up 'til mid-season, when Bort improved the receiver lead part of QB passing, the passing game was completely broken and many really good players were only performing during serious mismatches.

Pass-blocking has been a joke for two seasons - instead of forcing OTs to fix their builds, you break DEs? Inexcusable. Nerfing DTs this season because folks had figured out how to make them productive instead of again forcing people to figure out ways to improve their OGs to counter? Again inexcusable. Haven't fixed RB pathing in traffic in four seasons? Inexcusable. The only thing that hasn't been completely nerfed because it's "unrealistic" is power backs vs. linebackers. The right solution? Leave it alone until people put respectable strength on their LBs to counter, which is what is happening. It's the way EVERYTHING should be handled.

I personally hate blowout after blowout after blowout, but I'd rather see fixes in place than the consistent exploit/nerf cycle that exists.

actually we have been wondering what was wrong with the FB. they sometimes just wander around and say hi, pass out cookies and point out where the HB is going. we were kind of tough on them. i may need to apologize.

Grill has done some weird stuff, but overall hasn't been nearly as bad as most... not sure why

i agree with a lot of what you are saying. i do think some of the AI sets are evolving and you need to make changes to keep up. GM's are getting smarter and players aren't nerfed so it requires more understanding of what your own players can and more importantly cant do. for instance, durban gives up more yards than some of the top defenses, but they have personnel that cause fumbles. they play to their strengths.

when i started, i built my guys according to what a FS should need, what a WR should need, and so on. but then i would see guys with nothing but speed, for instance, out play everyone. warped builds flourished because they seemed to find holes in the AI. i think that is getting fixed but there are still problems.

for instance, early on we had a guy with low agility and high speed. in real life, he would fall down every time he tried to turn it was that drastic. but he kept up with everyone and played well. i have seen builds that would flame out in real football, but they killed it in the stats.

i think builds will start to shake out when we all hit year 13 and players decline and others are on the way up, but that's five seasons from now.

things are getting better, but there are broken parts.

There's no way realistic stats are better than the inflated ones. When someone has 103 sacks in a season you just look at that and say 'well they just figured out some trick with their build'. But when the top 3 sack leaders are 29, 20, 17, its more impressive for the guy who leads the league because its not some outlandish number, but it seems realistic, and you know he just built his DE much better than everyone else. Same goes with QB's, HB's and almost any other position

Its all about competition...the more CPU teams you play..the better your stats will be. Regardless of builds.. Elephant players will win most Individual stat honors this year...but with that being said...I'll take the "competition" and fun of Lion this year any day over padded stats!!!!

this season has been a joke.

powerbacks are a joke - throw away the gameplan and get the guy to carry. it's been chronic over the past 2 seasons where 1 guy can train his way through to the EZ again and again and again. safety? what safety?

LBs are a joke - thin red line. how much strength and tackle is enough? answer? there's never enough so making them useless when covering a HB route

FBs are a joke - they don't hit the hole at appropriate times

elusive backs are a joke - turn them into dual threats for any decent product as they are pretty much rubbish without a powerback to mix up the offense

VAs are a joke - some are completely useless whilst others (like Bruiser when added to Power Thru) are overpowered

OL blocking is a joke - my OL which excelled in season 6 looks distinctly average this season. heck i remember season 6 where we shut out the best DE ever to come out of A5 to handsomely beat the Killer Whales. who needed the nerf to DEs? we certainly didn't as we could handle them.

i may be biased but season 6 was fun and the balance of power was neither with the offense or defense. good gameplanning got you far and focussing on a weakspot or nullifying a strength was rewarding. not this season nor last.

recent events that make me question why i poured so much cash into this declining beta:
- HB Screens to a powerback killed us and our gameplanning was out the window in season 7
- punt returns at another team i GM finished off any chance of pulling off a surprise win.
- Powerbacks are the first point of focus for all DCos i know. stop them to 3-4 yards and you have a chance of winning. if you don't stop them then it's a case that you pray that your own powerback is more effective.

i gave up OCing a couple of teams as i became disinterested. i didn't like the idea of requiring a powerback to become competitive as it didn't suit my style of coaching. now it's a preprequisite. heck i had to bring in one for QPR just to keep up with the Jonses.

season 8 = fail (even if we win the championship - which is highly unlikely )
