Kobenhavn Huhnerfalken (8-0)
Last season was a bitter pill to swallow for Kobenhavn, as they compiled a respectable 12-4 regular season record in their first season in A#1. After a first-round ejection from the playoffs, the team's agency vowed to improve the roster. After several big off-season acquisitions, the Huhnerfalken knew they would soar over the competition in season 8.
Beginning the 2nd half of the season, Kobenhavn looks to smash the dreams of one of last season's BBB finest, the East Cairo Argonauts--but will ECA be able to exploit Kobenhavn's 75 team chemistry, and will it be enough to make up for the level differences? The scary thing about Kobenhavn is that out of all the team's they've faced this season, the (2-6) Atom Bombs gave them their closest win--and they have yet to face last season's BBB#1 best in ECA, Passion, and Stockholm. They also have the formidable Parma Panthers standing in their way, an early pre-season Alpha favorite.
Despite it's perfect 8-0 record, Kobenhavn has yet to prove they are the true dominant force in A#1 this season, although a complete destruction of ECA in week 9 might go a long way in convincing people they are.
Passion Fruits (7-1)
An unquestionable favorite regardless of their opponent last season, the Passion Fruits have continued their streak of winning football after promotion last season. Convincing wins against Manchester, Stockholm, and Parma make the change in weight class look easy for the Fruits. They arguably have faced the toughest competition of any of the remaining teams also at 7-1, and make them a clear cut favorite for the #2 seed in the playoffs, presumably 2nd to Kobenhavn.
While the Fruits have struggled in the first half of the season to make the top 3 in passing or rushing offense in a decidely Un-Passionate way, their defense has racked very impressive stats for the amount of time they actually spend on the field. The Fruits' final 4 games of the season will be a true testament of their will, and they'll need to be on their A-Game to insure a top playoff seed.
East Cairo Argonauts (7-1)
At the beginning the East Cairo Argonauts would have called you crazy if you'd said they'd be 7-1 to start the season off. Division powerhouses like Kobenhavn, Torpedo, Roman, Parma, and the once-great Atom Bombs loomed large as the Argos felt dwarfed by the higher-level competition. But 150 team veteran points worth of "David vs. Goliath" later they are starting to gain some confidence.
The Argonauts have largely slashed through the competition thus far in the season, stumbling briefly in a 1-point loss to the Red Devils, the lone blemish on their record. Luckily for ECA they are as lucky as they are skilled, and have inherited a very easy schedule until this point in the season, and they'll need to maintain their level of play in order to have a decent seed in the playoffs.
Parma Panthers (7-1)
Last season's BBB#2 Alpha Conference Champions were heavy favorites to start the season, an,d they have mostly lived up to the hype thus far. "There ain't no shame in losin' to a Fruit," my grandfather always said, "Cause them motherfuckers can ball." Parma suffered from huge chemistry issues in that game, and despite those same issues has managed convincing wins over the Union Jacks, SBD, Manchester, and the Red Devils to name a few.
A very solid running game backs up their lethal passing attack, and they'll need both as they go up against the recently-hot Torpedo Cowthorpe in week 9. This game will largely set the tone for the home stretch of their season where they'll face the best in the conference.
Roman Legionnaires (6-2)
Another team that received some pre-season attention, the Romans did little to disappoint in the early part of the season, amassing an impressive 6-1 record before running into trouble in week 8 against the Argonauts. For weeks on end the Romans had the most powerful running attack in the conference spearheaded by stud HB Earl "I Don't Your Chunky Soup I Got My Own" Campbell. Defensive lines quivered in fear at the sight of the perfectly-formed phalanx of Roman soldiers, and the Legionnaires stampeded their way to victory time and again.
Week 8 saw the downfall of that attack, and the last half of the season will be a tough task. Will the Legionnaires be able to reinvent themselves, and add some zest to their recently-stunted rushing attack? Or will they fade into mediocrity and scrape to make the playoffs. A tough week 9 matchup should tell us all we need to know.
