Strength of Record

Equation

Strength of Record = (Total number of wins of opponents you have defeated) - (Total number of losses of opponents that have beaten you)

Definition

This is measure of how good a team is. It rewards beating good teams and punishes for losing to bad teams.

Quality of Play

Equation

Quality of Play = (Actual total point differential) - (Predicted total point differential)

Definition

It is essentially how many points (total) that team has beaten (or not beaten) the spread by. I feel it is a good indicator of whether a team is playing better or worse than expected.

The quality of play stat means precisely nothing when you think about it. That projector has had the scores so messed up all season and it is just now starting to get a little bit better so as for now that number doesn't mean anything!!

I like the idea of quality of play, as a team that is 6-0 and has played 6 cupcake teams is not as good as a team that is 4-2 against 6 top teams.

Yeah but that is more of a strength of schedule thing to me. All quality of play shows you is:

The projector says you are going to win the game 55-30 against another decent team. The actual game score turns out 30-21 with you winning. That gives you a -16 on the quality of play score because you were predicted to win by 25 but you won by 9. Do I have this right? Maybe I am misunderstanding.

If I do have it right, that means nothing because computer is terrible at predicting scores early on.

that's what I thought it was and I agree if that's true; the top 2 teams are near the bottom in quality of play

Now Strength of record, that is a good indicator of how your team is IMO. 20 for the Chronic Crusaders is a great score. That means they have beaten teams with really good records and haven't lost to anyone!!!

No coincidence that the teams Power Ranking goes quite a bit by the strength of schedule numbers. 20 is pretty good!!!
