ALPHA
It took 5 weeks of games but I think I have a handle on Alpha. It will still be turbulent because with the exception of Oslo, every other playoff team has been or has shown the potential to be very vulnerable and be knocked off by much lesser teams. Even Oslo has been playing down to their competition it seems. At this point, you can be sure that eight of the top nine teams right now will be in the playoffs, and that everyone else is all done.
1. Oslo Norsemen (Previous: 1)
-What was said about them? Beat up on the Zeta Stockholm team, and then took Helsinki behind the woodshed, introducing them to WE A4. Three easy games coming up that should give them time to sit on the throne for another few games.
-What has changed? Nothing has changed, beat up on three Alpha patsies, and after a test this week against the Magic Dragons, have two more patsies in a row. Not sold on having them in the top spot, and this position is far from secure from them. Stumble against the Magic Dragons and watch how far and how fast they tumble. That being said they have shown no signs of not being the top team in Alpha.
-Prediction: Conference championship contender.
2. Dresden Destroyers (Previous: 2)
-What was said about them? Used a solid ground game and exceptional aerial game to knock Amsterdam off and out of the top spot. After Arlington this week they have a stretch of dangerous but winnable games to show if they deserve their lofty ranking in this crowded field.
-What has changed? Still think they are one of the top teams in Alpha, and that their loss to Tulsa can be chalked up to the attrition that is A4 Alpha. If they had won that game they would have a lock on the top spot now, but they do not so they stay in second. Their gritty win over Ayrshire really helped them out.
-Prediction: Conference championship contender.
3. Tulsa Doom (Previous: 9)
-What was said about them? Their defense is their weak point, but that is not what undid them today, it was their woeful offense. Was not expecting that showing from their running game, and they have no time to waste in fixing it as two top three teams come up next.
-What has changed? Big jumper this week, as they clearly have fixed whatever problems, if any, were visible at the beginning of the season. That loss to Madrid has me scratching my head more on where I have them ranked than where I have Tulsa ranked, but Tulsa has showed me in two huge games in a row that it has the mettle to contend for the championship.
-Prediction: Conference championship contender.
4. Amsterdam Red Lights (Previous: 3)
-What was said about them? Dominated a bad Zeta team in Arlanda, and then lost a close fought game against a Dresden team that looks much better than it did in preseason (I like their name more too
). Still think they have an excellent chance to be there in the end, but I can't keep them in the top spot this week.
-What has changed? Followed the Dresden loss up with a loss to Tulsa, who then went out and beat Dresden as well. Good week for Tulsa, bad week for Amsterdam, although they did stick it to two lesser Alpha teams afterwards. Two more free wins and then the battle for Amsterdam commences.
-Prediction: Top four contender.
5. Stockholm Dynamites (Previous: 5)
-What was said about them? Did well against two teams of inferior competition, has a great chance in week 3 to show the kind of team they are. If they beat the Magic Dragons they have a great chance to host Dresden in week 7 as an undefeated team, and play for a top four slot.
-What has changed? I'm standing by my previous week's prediction. I think they are a strong team, but their lack of a tough schedule and tight win against the Magic Dragons will not allow me to move them up further. Wins in the next two weeks will, however, move them up significantly.
-Prediction: Top four contender.
6. The Drunken Potato Farmers of Ayrshire (Previous: 7)
-What was said about them? Beaten badly in their first game, rebounded very well in their second to knock off the Magic Dragons. They showed how resilient they were when rebounding from their loss at the end of the regular season in BBB8 to win the trophy, so they can never be counted out.
-What has changed? Two cake wins over awful teams, and then a close loss to Dresden that could have gone either way. Sit respectably in the 6th spot, with three of their next four games being crucial to determine their seeding. Beat Helsinki and Barcelona and they can punch a playoff ticket in their first season up in A4, beat Stockholm as well and they can start thinking home game.
-Prediction: Playoffs.
7. Amsterdam Magic Dragons (Previous: 6)
-What was said about them? Running game just straight up did not click against Ayershire. Their defense played well, but their offense got out gameplanned. Lethal stretch coming up, for their sake they need to recover fast.
-What has changed? Look to have righted their ship, with a close loss to Stockholm followed by two excellent wins for playoff position over Turff and Barcelona. A win over Madrid in week 7 punches their ticket, but they are about to embark on a brutal schedule that means they might not see a win for several games.
-Prediction: Playoff contender.
8. Madrid Pirates (Previous: 8)
-What was said about them? I think this boost might be a bit high for them, but at least for the time being they're in the playoff field in these predictions. Tulsa is a good team and they dispatched of them. I think Helsinki and they are similar teams so week 3 will tell us a lot about the playoff fight in Alpha.
-What has changed? Enigmatic team. Only team to have beaten Tulsa, who beat two of the top teams in Alpha, but also barely beat Helsinki, who is too far out to make the playoffs already. Which Madrid will show up against the Magic Dragons in week seven, and most importantly which Madrid will show up for their inhumane end of the season stretch.
-Prediction: Playoff contender.
9. Barcelona Assassins (Previous: 4)
-What was said about them? At a time of great volatility in Alpha, Barcelona had an easier schedule and stayed strong, moving up a few spots. Their win against Bolderslev was impressive, key matchup against the Magic Dragons in week four could solidify this position.
-What has changed? That win against Bolderslev looks horrendous right now, whereas three games ago it looked good. That speaks to how bad Bolderslev is, and how much more Barcelona should have beaten them by. Crushing loss to the Magic Dragons costs them what could amount to be a crucial tiebreaker in the race for the last Alpha playoff spot. Schedule really toughens up in week seven.
-Prediction: Playoff contender.
10. Helsinki Hitmen (Previous: 11)
-What was said about them? Eked out a win against the Wall, and lost against Oslo, and lost badly. Upcoming schedule does them no favors.
-What has changed? Almost nipped Madrid, but that was the high point of the last three games. Needed to win one of them to ensure that they have a chance at the playoffs, and they didn't so now I think it is too late for the Hitmen, start working on your stadium and wait 'til next year.
-Prediction: Outside looking in.
11. Hell on Turff (Previous: 10)
-What was said about them? Adequate showing so far, Palmetto was a team on their level that they beat so their 2-0 record keeps them in the playoff hunt. Need to move the ball better on offense to work their way in to the playoff field. A win against the Magic Dragons in week 5 would move them up a spot or two.
-What has changed? Didn't just lose to the Magic Dragons, they got shitstomped. That shows me that Turff isn't ready to compete with teams like that for the last playoff spots.
-Prediction: Outside looking in.
12. Louisville Cards (Previous: 12)
-What was said about them? Beat a pre-CPU 404 team, but that doesn't say much as they were manhandled by the Dynamites too. I don't think the playoffs are in the "cards" this season (nyuk nyuk nyuk) but do think that if they can do well in their upcoming games that they can merit a discussion.
-What has changed? Non-respectable losses to Barcelona and the Turff, but not the worst loss ever to Oslo. The teams below them are playing worse so they stay put.
-Prediction: Bottom third.
13. Newcastle Magpies (Previous: 13)
-What was said about them? Still going with the passing as much as possible offense, and that will not work in Alpha. Can officially move them out of the possible contenders category.
-What has changed? New name, same awful team.
-Prediction: Bottom third.
14. Palmetto Gamecocks (Previous: 14)
-What was said about them? Played the Turff well, but can not establish a running game. They will lose many games until they can figure their offense out.
-What has changed? Tulsa up next, Dresden in two weeks. Seven losses in Alpha means staying home.
-Prediction: Bottom third.
15. Arlington Avalanche (Previous: 15)
-What was said about them? Hung 40 on Newcastle, but also gave up 100, showing both how bad Arlington is and how bad Newcastle is.
-What has changed? Three awful losses in a row to good teams.
-Prediction: Bottom third.
16. Stockholm Storm (Previous: 16)
-What was said about them? Still slowbuilding.
-What has changed? Still slowbuilding.
-Prediction: Bottom third.
ZETA
Lyon upended Jacksonville, and nothing else interesting to report, nor will therebe to report for a couple more games.
1. Newark Nomads (Previous: 1)
-What was said about them? Have done nothing but take care of business. Really smacked Bolderslev around which was a performance worthy of #1. Should remain a lock for this position until a midseason jaunt with Krakow and Jacksonville where they get their shots.
-What has changed? Will get something of a test against the Wall in week six, but it is their showdown for first place in week eight that must have Newark drooling (or worrying?).
-Prediction: Conference championship contender.
2. Krakow Knights (Previous: 2)
-What was said about them? Beat back a Lyon team that almost took one from them, and in doing so made sure they stay in any discussion of the conference's top team. Shouldn't have a problem rolling into week 8 at home against Newark as an undefeated team.
-What has changed? Their win over Lyon looks better now that Lyon scraped by Jacksonville. Just like Newark, the waiting until week eight must be unbearable, but they get their crack at the Wall a week after Newark does.
-Prediction: Conference championship contender.
3. Lyon Winemakers (Previous: 4)
-What was said about them? Played well against Krakow despite the level difference, and showed that they belong in the top four of the league. Chance to really prove it against Jacksonville in week 3. After that, brutal schedule softens up for a long time.
-What has changed? Clinched their home game for all intents and purposes with the win over Jacksonville. Should win out until their showdown with Newark in week 16.
-Prediction: Top four.
4. Jacksonville Jackalopes (Previous: 3)
-What was said about them? Two impressive wins, albeit against opposition way below them. Three games in a row against mid-range Zeta playoff teams ahead.
-What has changed? Beaten in a very close game by Lyon, which costs them ground in the seeding race. Looks to gain some of it back in weeks nine and ten.
-Prediction: Top four.
5. The Berlin Wall (Previous: 6)
-What was said about them? Have played maybe two of the ugliest games in the history of Goal Line Blitz in the first two weeks, splitting them. Have three free wins with which to shake off the cobwebs hanging on their running game.
-What has changed? Good old fashioned awful team beatdowns provided the offense with some spark. Lets see if they can sustain it through their murderous three game stretch coming up.
-Prediction: Playoffs.
6. Victoria Assassins (Previous: 7)
-What was said about them? Another offensively challenged team, although they have NO excuse for it with their talent. They will lose their next three games, and badly. Hopefully for them they can bounce back after it, their 1-4 start should still take them to the playoffs.
-What has changed? At 1-4 still have nothing to worry about, as their schedule greatly eases up. Must win game against Monte Carlo in a few weeks.
-Prediction: Playoff contender.
7. Bolderslev Pirates (Previous: 5)
-What was said about them? Playoff berth is definitely there, but they need to shake off the rust and do it quick as the home game and the rest of their seeding is slipping away.
-What has changed? I am no longer certain about their shot at a playoff berth, which says a lot about Zeta that a team playing this bad can even consider the playoffs as an end destination.
-Prediction: Playoff contender.
8. Venice Freebirds (Previous: 8)
-What was said about them? Surprisingly won a strongly weighted win against MCRG that they now have a game over them for the 8th playoff spot. If they don't lose to any other teams below them, they're probably in the playoffs.
-What has changed? Their win against MCRG is still holding up, and is their tiebreaker.
-Prediction: Playoff contender.
9. Monte Carlo Red Glade (Previous: 9)
-What was said about them? Have not had an easy go of it so far in A4, and that loss to Venice is a killer. Their situation is the opposite to Venice's, if they can't knock off one of the top seven, theyre sitting at home on day 33.
-What has changed? Their weeks eight and nine games define their season, if they can't win one of them they won't make the playoffs probably.
-Prediction: Playoff contender.
10. Arlanda Jets (Previous: 10)
-What was said about them? Someone had to be #10, and they are the least horrendous team left. Zeta's bottom half really sucks.
-What has changed? Still remain the least bad of all the teams in Zeta with no chance.
-Prediction: Outside looking in.
11. Stockholm Assassins (Previous: 11)
-What was said about them? CPU players have taken hold, and this team is decent at best, although they can probably scrape their way to a respectable looking 6-10 or 7-9 season.
-What has changed? CPU players + lack of other talent = Bottom third.
-Prediction: Bottom third.
12. Bordeaux Carlin (Previous: 14)
-What was said about them? Luckily got to play a CPU team, the only level of team run worse than Bordeaux.
-What has changed? Beat Achei to move them up and Achei down.
-Prediction: Bottom third.
13. Berlin Spartans (Previous: 13)
-What was said about them? Spanked twice in a row, nothing else to add.
-What has changed? Beat the CPU 404 then lost twice in a row badly.
-Prediction: Bottom third.
14. Achei Crotone (Previous: 12)
-What was said about them? Still inactive, still sucks.
-What has changed? Still inactive, still sucks.
-Prediction: Bottom third.
15. Atlanta 404 (Previous: 15)
-What was said about them? CPU.
-What has changed? CPU.
-Prediction: Bottom third.
16. Chrulle Mavericks (Previous: 16)
-What was said about them? CPU.
