Yet another sellout crowd filed out satisfied with a 45-20 Dart Frogs victory over the New Jersey Beaver Hunters on this muggy evening in Surabaya. The Dart Frogs appeared sluggish in the first half as they trailed 7-3 with under four minutes left in the first half. Andy Bailey scored to put the Dart Frogs up 10-7, but the Beaver Hunters drove the length of the field and looked to tie it up or take the lead going into the locker room. Defensive player of the game Andre Hawkins changed all that by picking off a pass from Mister BigThrow at the goal line and taking it 100 yards the other way, giving the Frogs a 17-7 halftime advantage. In the second half, Julian Bricknell came up with huge kickoff returns for touchdowns the last two times New Jersey scored.
“That Julian Bricknell is one cool cat,” said Hawkins. “Me and him have been hanging out with Andy Bailey. Those cats are both smooth. I’m trying to make things happen on D like they do on special teams and offense. Tonight I was able to make some things happen out there. They mixed it up on us on both sides of the ball and kind of threw us off balance, but we were able to make some adjustments at halftime and I think it worked out alright.” Hawkins has 3 interceptions on the season and has returned all three for touchdowns. “That’s nothin’, man,” interjected Hawkins. “In high school I averaged three defensive touchdowns a game. And I got 4 in one game intercepting pitches from the QB to the back. You gotta be ready to play.” Hawkins off-season workouts have paid off as he trimmed his 40-time to 4.2 and improved his vertical, hands, and shuttle times.
The Dart Frogs D played a bend but don’t break style this game, but will have to be more aggressive to hang with the Manila Pack next week. The Frogs will then be home in 2 weeks to face the Cobras from Bacolod.
