Dateline: Surabaya, The Pond, Capacity 55,520

With a capacity crowd on hand, the Surabaya Poison Dart Frogs kicked off their Season 8 campaign in style, with a rousing 144-0 victory over the Drifters from Beijing. The Dart Frogs defense held Beijing to a net yardage of 4.5 yards in 86 plays. Meanwhile, the Frog offense was compiling over 560 yards and special teams played a huge factor with 7 punt return touchdowns. The game got out of hand in the first half and quickly turned into a rout. By the fourth quarter, a collective groan could be heard in the stadium if a punt return did not find paydirt. With a 39.5 yard punting average countered by the 45.7 yard punt return average of Surabaya’s Julian Bricknell, Beijing would have been better served by having the quarterback take a knee on fourth down in this contest.

“I didn’t know much about that team,” said one fan, “but apparently their mascot describes how they recruit players, by picking up drifters off the streets of Beijing and slapping a helmet and pads on them. Doesn’t make for a great team, but it was kind of fun to watch us beat the snot out of them. It gave me a chance to throw back quite a few cold ones, too.”

Owner/GM marshks was a bit more sympathetic towards the opposition. “The Frogs will take any victory. It’s just one win, and clearly Beijing is still building their franchise. I was really pleased to see over 55,000 Surabaya fans enjoying this game. Great start to the season.”

Surabaya was led offensively in this game by its new field general Tommy Bee and newest wideout, Mantis Little Debbie. Both were part of an outstanding off-season for the Dart Frogs. “I’m amazed how this team has responded to having me as a new leader on the field and in the locker room,” said Tommy Bee. “We were just tired of beating each other up on the practice field, so it’s great to get out there against another uniform. Our offensive line got a lot stronger and our defense is amazing this season. I love being on this team. It’s just a great situation for me and my family loves Surabaya.” Tommy Bee has the heart of a champion and has won at every level. His QB destiny has been settled since the age of 4, when Tommy was a ball boy at his brother’s high school game in Michigan. Tommy picked up a loose ball on the sideline, took a three step drop, and winged the pigskin 50 yards on the money to his big brother. Despite having a vision deficit being only 3’ tall at the time, Tommy was inserted into a varsity game in the fourth quarter and threw 3 TDs to lead his alma mater to a fourth quarter comeback victory. Tommy secured that position for the next 14 seasons and became the first 14-time state champion in Michigan history.

The Dart Frogs, while thrilled with a victory, did not celebrate long as they began preparations to play the Death Squad in Manila before returning home to face the New Jersey Beaver Hunters.

There is open and then there is open. Mantis was open. Tommy & Lil Bob found him.

Sometimes Andy was open:

And sometimes he made himself open anyway.

Either way, the QBs found him, too.

This series featured a 3 and out with 3 sacks from 3 different Frogs. First X, then Popper, then Julius. Enjoy.

So, after you’ve been sacked 3 times, committed a false start penalty, and find yourself backed up with 4th and 28 from your own 9, what do you do? Time to punt, right? Uh, maybe not. Julian with his first of 7 (and my favorite) punt return touchdown.

Andre “Ball Hawk” Hawkins jumped the route and picked this one clean for a 40 yard pick-6. Nice.

4 minutes later he said, “That was tasty. I think I’ll have me another 40 yard pick-6.” Do work, Andre.

But my personal favorite defensive play was watching Nick Crusher come off HB coverage and show off his wheels to deflect this pass.

Nice 97-yard punt return touchdown and 62-yarder close out the game for the Frogs…

Me too - I was a little disappointed that he did not do one for the Sting game last season. I had circled that on the schedule, but never saw one - I think he stopped at game 9 last season. I enjoy reading these...

What is most impressive is they did that as an unranked team going up against a pre-season top 10. Just amazing.

Yeah. I didn't get one for Tibet either. I hadn't realized it until now. But I was looking forward to it.
