Western Conference Top 5
1.) Gaffney Indians
Previous Ranking: 1st
Record: 12-1
Key Wins: Lethbridge Fighters (21-19), Algoma Arena Rockers (23-14), TBS (24-17), U.C. Evil Monkeys (36-13)
Key Loses: Richmond Rebels (28-34)
Last 4Games:
Richmond Rebels (6-6) - Loss.....28-34
Grand Forks Falcons (7-6) - Win - The Falcons have played everyone tough, just haven't come out on top this season
Timber Bay Snow Cats (7-6) - Win - should win this one, a good practice run for Stanleys
Surrey Fighting Stanleys (9-4) - Win - Stanleys are primed for an upset, but will Gaffney be caught off-guard twice?
My Thoughts:
Last week I said - "IMO they win out and are coasting to the playoffs." I still think they are the #1 team in the West, but Richmond proved they started the cruise control a little to early. Gaffney has already locked up the #1 seed so even if they lose to the Stanley's they will not lose their top seeding. The real question is, after a shocking loss to Richmond and many close calls this season how far can the Indians go in the playoffs?
2.) Algoma Arena Rockers
Previous Ranking: 2nd
Record: 11-2
Key Wins: Lethbridge Fighters (29-23), U.C. Evil Monkeys (31-17),
Key Loses: Gaffney Indians (14-23), Thunder Bay Sabertooths (26-33)
Last 4 Games:
Timber Bay Snow Cats (7-5) - Win.....36-13
Surrey Fighting Stanleys (9-4) - Win - I can see one upset from the Stanley's is it Gaffney, TBS or Algoma???
Grise Fjord ^^^Kodiaks^^^ (6-7) - Win - Kodiaks started a Fire Sale right after I posted last weeks ranking = Stat padder
B.K. Thunderbirds (0-13) - Win - Stat padder
My Thoughts:
Even after Gaffney took the biggest upset of the season they still hold the #1 seed. Algoma has one more tough game vs Stanley. I see them winning that one and coasting into the playoffs. The question is will they be the #3 seed or will TBS get a late season upset and lose the #2 seed? If these guys finish #3 and TBS #2 then that 2nd round matchup will be very exciting!
3.) Thunder Bay Sabertooths
Previous Ranking: 4th
Record: 11-2
Key Wins: Algoma Arena Rockers (33-26), U.C. Evil Monkeys (22-19 OT)
Key Loses: Gaffney Indians (17-24), Lethbridge Fighters (7-39)
Key Games:
Grand Forks Falcons (7-5) - Win.....26-6
Timber Bay Snow Cats (7-6) - Win - Ryan has TBS playing very good ball, this should be good practice run for Stanleys
Surrey Fighting Stanleys (9-4) - Win - Stanleys play Algoma the game before, can they pull back to back upsets or will Ryan's run continue!
Grise Fjord ^^^Kodiaks^^^ (6-7) - Win - Did you miss the Fire Sale? I did!
My Thoughts:
TBS loss to Gaffney (like everyone else) just like I thought, but they played them very, very well! I continue to be impressed by young Ryan's game planning. He has done a good job at recruiting and probably has the 3rd highest level team in the West (Gaff/Leth). TBS has IMO the hardest schedule left of the Top 4. All games they should be favored, but with very close wins over the Punishers (20-6) and Rebels (16-0) I would not be surprised to see an upset. If I am Ryan I am very upset that I have to play the Stanleys this late in the season!
That was last weeks comments, not much has changed. I will say that I am very impressed with TBS' defense and will even go out on limb and say they have the best defense in the West! I don't think they will get upset, but like I mentioned last week that Stanley game is not what you want this late when you are fighting for the #2 seed.
4.) Uranium City Evil Monkeys
Previous Ranking: None
Record: 10-3
Key Wins: Lethbridge Fighters (13-12)
Key Loses: Gaffney Indians (13-36), Algoma Arena Rockers (17-31), TBS (19-22 OT)
Key Games:
Lethbridge Fighters (9-3) - Win.....13-12
Marley’s Pot Puffing Indigents (3-10) - Win - We are looking forward to chilling with Vortox
Sackville Mutant-Skunks (0-13) - Win - Stat padders are always nice toward the end of the season
Moose Jaw Mac Attack (2-11) - Win - The last time we played Moose Jaw they upset us in the 2nd Rd of playoffs!!!!
My Thoughts:
The Evil Monkeys make their 1st appearance in the rankings after a big win. After a nerve racking couple of days game planning for Lethbridge U.C. is glad to have an easy schedule before the playoffs. They are even happier that with the win over Lethbridge they clinched the #4 seed and a playoff home game. After losing 3 straight to the top 3 the Evil Monkeys have ran off 9 straight wins. Much like Gaffney their wins have not been dominate nor pretty, but a Win is a Win. With three very winnable games left the Evil Monkeys should finish 13-3 in their first season in Can A. A rematch with Lethbridge in the 1st Rd of the Playoffs will be as tough as they come. The winner gets Gaffney, the loser becomes the favorite to win it all in Season 8!
5.) Lethbridge Fighters
Previous Ranking: 3rd
Record: 9-4
Key Wins: Thunder Bay Sabertooths (39-7)
Key Loses: Algoma Arena Rockers (23-29), Gaffney Indians (19-21), U.C. Evil Monkeys (12-13)
Key Games:
Uranium City Evil Monkeys (9-3) - Loss.....12-13
Saskatchewan Limas (6-7) - Win - After a heart breaking loss I see the Fighters coming out swinging!
Marley’s Pot Puffing Indigents (3-10) - Win - I think the Marley's will be "puff, puff giving" all game! Fighters win by 40!
Sackville Mutant-Skunks (0-13) - Win - Leth will go for some trophies in this stat padding game
My Thoughts:
The Fighters loss out on a Home Playoff game and roughly $3.5 Million with the loss to the Evil Monkeys. The game was pretty ugly for both teams, but more so for the Fighters who dominated the game midway through the 3rd qrt until the end. The Evil Monkeys pull off their best KDK impression as they could as they allowed the Fighters into the Redzone 4 times but never gave up a TD (4 FGs). These two teams will face off again in the 1st round of the playoffs. I know that day can't come soon enough for shawnjeffery and the Fighters!
Notes:
- Stanley's have to face Gaffney, Algoma and TBS in their last 3 games....ouch!
- Gaffney locked up the #1 Seed
- U.C. locked up the #4 Seed
- Lethbridge locked up the #5 seed
This is just my opinion and for fun, so enjoy!
