Is it worth it?, or is First step the better route?, or is a combo of both good?

Depends. For Quick Cut or First Step to trigger, you'd need it to really be at like 7; since neither exists on the tree, that's very hard. Unless you can get two Quick Cut pieces of equipment, I would suggest laying off of those and getting a Protector piece (which will take awhile)
