I've been considering altering the formula by which the power scores are generated.

Right now it's (W*5) - (L*5) + (SoV*3) - (SoL*3) + (MoV*0.1)

where SoV = cumulative wins by defeated opponents, SoL = cumulative losses by opponents who defeated you, and MoV = cumulative margin of victory, capped at 10 points (+100 final score)

Obviously we've seen some gaping holes in this, where teams who beat up on 0 and 1 win teams jump ahead of teams who won tough games against tough opponents.

So the alteration I was considering was this:

(W*5) - (L*5) + (SoV*3) - (SoL*3) + (MoV*(SoV-SoL)*0.01)

where, instead of just a flat tenth of a point, teams only score margin of victory as a product of their cumulative strength of schedule (SoV - SoL)

If I haven't baked your brain with algebra, I'd like to hear a yeah or nay vote on this. Shall I change the ranking system, or is it fine the way it is?

One of the immediate products of this change you'll see is a few more teams rising above other teams with better outright W-L records, because beating up on sucky teams won't mean as much in the rankings.

I wouldn't mind seeing both this week, if possible. That way, we can really see the difference. If you can't do both, I prefer the newer formula...

That's doable, and may be a good idea - although teams that were negatively impacted by it will probably cry foul, while teams positively impacted will cheer.

If the Raptors are around 10, then the calculations are probably in the ballpark

I'd run with the new settings as well.

Rapts are around 10 either way.

I think the new way makes more sense, but then again, by the end of the season, doesn't Strength of Schedule work itself out pretty much?

Also, is there any way to weigh recent games more heavily? If that's too difficult, then whatever.

I vote yes, but then I was never very good at maths

I honestly have no idea what you just wrote.

But given the work you've put into this, I'm happy with whatever you decide on.

There is something to say for Strength of schedule. I think a tough win should have more weight to it than a win vs. a weaker opponent. But if a weaker opponent gives you a "real" game, then your win doesn't factor as much, but the loosing team that was much weaker, should get a little boost to the loss level factor. ie,.. Win = less % / Loosing team loss =+%. OR leave it because you have done so much, so far.

I was told there would be no math.

Strength of Schedule has everything to do with it, but what you're seeing here, and something I'm trying to fix, is as follows:

Team A (7-0) beats up on a hapless 2-5 team. Caps the MoV for 10 points, the win is worth 5, and that opponent's 2 wins is worth 6. Total: 21 points.
Team B (7-0) wins a squeaker against a 5-2 team. MoV only gets him .4 points, the win is still worth 5, and that opponent's 5 wins is worth 15 points. Total: 20.4 points.

So maybe I should just lower the cap on MoV to +/- 75? 50? What's a good number that still acknowledges a sound beating without de-emphasizing Strength of Schedule?
