We are rapidly approaching the half way mark of the season, and the cream has officially risen to the top. Teams like Moose Factory, Toronto, Kodiak, Doom Mountain, and Alberta are the current favorites to take home the conference title, but going beyond that, it is the Mounties and Peace who have really looked impressive. It will take supreme efforts by the Bears, Demons, and Gangsters to surpass either of those two teams.
Moose Factory Mounties vs. Prince Edward Island Royalty
The Royalty jumped into the A leagues and took off with a bang. It took all the way to week 5, and the likes of Club America and Vtech to bring their machine to a grinding halt. However, while the Mounties take pride in running a balanced offense, it is their stud HB, Jerk Trail, that makes their wheels turn. In 5 short games he has accumulated more then 1,300 yards and 33 touchdowns. While the Royalty has had remarkable success against the run, they are yet to face a talent like Trail. I expect the Mounties to win by a wide margin here.
Doom Mountain Demons vs. Ontario Coyotes
Doom Mountain, like many teams this year, has gone to a bit more of a pass offense, and rightly so. With the likes of QB, Going Deep, and newly acquired WR, Lebron "The King" James, they have torched opposing corners on a regular basis. Ontario, on the other hand, has tiptoed around the league to this point sporting a respectable 2-3 record for a promoted team. However, this week they will face their toughest opponent to date, and I feel that they will have a rather tough go at it. Doom Mountain reigns supreme here. 53-14
Quebec Eh's vs. Calgary Jaguars
Calgary has had a pretty tough schedule to start out the season, but they have still managed a good 3-2 record. They knocked off a talented Alberta squad in week 2, and suffered losses to powerhouses Revelstoke and Toronto. They Eh's, have struggled to put points up, and their run D has been pourous at best. I don't think they'll have the muscle to hold back the gates this week as Calgary puts up 40+ on them.
South Manitoba Shady Devils vs. Niagra Falls Barrel Riders
These two teams have been playing tag since their inception two years ago. The Shady Devils got the best of them in their last two matchups, but it appears that the Barrel Riders made one or two more nice moves in the last offseason. I expect this to be a grind it out game that is decided late in the 4th quarter.
Great Bear Lake Shamans vs. Heartbreak Ridge Recons
The Shamans have had pretty good success through the air this season, and the Recons are dead last in pass defense. This doesn't bode well for Heartbreak Ridge as they get bowled over this week.
Kodiak Bears vs. Victoria Secret
The Secret has no clue what trout are, and no idea where to look for them. Bears will maul 'em!
Vancouver Jaguars vs. Queensland Exiles
The Exiles are also a team that belongs in the upper echelon, but they are just one step behind some of the above mentioned teams. This week they draw a cupcake CPU team, and will pad their stats enormously.
Toronto Peace vs. Alberta Gangsters.
GAME OF THE WEEK
The 5-0 Peace will face off against the 4-1 Gangsters this week. These two teams both like to run, and stop the run, which makes for an intriguing matchup. Neither team is particularily strong passing the ball, but if you had run games like these two, why would you really even try. The Peace feature HB, Clark Swerdan, while the Gangsters rely upon a 3 headed attack. Both teams have faced off against talented Queensland and Calgary teams, but it is Toronto that has had more success against both. I pick the Peace to win this one by at least 2 TD's.
