In a rematch of last season’s Southeast Asia A#1 Conference Finals, the Dart Frogs once again prevailed over the Hakone Heroes. However, there was much more drama to this contest, as Hakone led almost the entire game before falling 44-41 in overtime. Hakone led 24-10 late in the second quarter before Surabaya drove the length of the field to cut the halftime deficit to seven on a 9 yard pass to Hummer Johnson. Hakone’s Zack Crockett scored on a 1 yard plunge with 2 and a half minutes to go in the fourth before Surabaya made its dramatic comeback. Trailing 41-27, Jake “The Snake” Delhomme found Steve “Lightning” Smith deep for a 71 yard TD on a 2-play scoring drive. The Dart Frogs picked a great time to hold the Heroes to their only three and out of the game. The Frogs marched 67 yards down the field in 8 plays before Lil Bob passed to Smith for a 14 yard TD with sixteen ticks left on the clock. The teams traded three and outs in overtime before the Frogs drove to the 15 and kicked the winning field goal five minutes into overtime.
The revamped linebacker corps took its licks this game from Hakone’s power rushing attack. “I don’t think I’ve ever missed three tackles in a game before,” said Strongman Linebacker, the Frogs’ newest outside linebacker. “In high school if we missed a tackle, we’d have to wash all the gear after the game. I did that once, and that was enough for me. I don’t know what they feed those boys down in Hakone, but they run like mules. They are slippery, too.” Strongman was not alone, as Surabaya missed a season high 27 tackles. “It took four or five of us to bring those guys down. That was a real solid team we just beat. I’m glad we don’t have to play them again until the playoffs.” Strongman had been dominating a lower level league before getting called up to the Frogs. Born in west Texas, Strongman made a living as a blacksmith prior to enrolling in college at Sam Houston State. He would race the horses around the track to tire them out before shoeing them, and Strongman was said to have won his share of the reaces. While at a fratenity party his freshman year, Strongman was seen bending 2” steel rods into animal sculptures with his bare hands as a party trick. He soon found himself on the football squad, where he became an All-American and a first-round GLB draft pick his sophomore year, only his second of organized football.
Surabaya returns home tomorrow to face the Death Squad from Manila. The upstart Dart Frogs are a surprising 5-0 this season, extending their regular season win streak to 20 games. Meanwhile, the Death Squad is an equally surprising 0-5. The Frogs are taking nothing for granted as they know each game is potentially deadly, none more so than this one.
