How did the Cheetahs beat the Avalanche by 10+ points and we are ranked lower than them? How does that work out?

Still a good job but I just don't understand the rankings.

avalanche scored more points in the first 3 games then the cheetahs did... this is all based off points.

I'm assuming the points for and points against has something to do with these rankings, since if you're going by "strength of schedule" you'd definitely consider Cheetahs a better team (at this point anyway) simply because they've faced tougher teams.

My power rankings are not only based on points scored, but also 19 other statistical categories, so it is true you beat the Avalanche, statistically they still hold a slight advantage over the cheetah's. SOS is accounted for, but since the season is still early this has little affect on the rankings.

I think the thing you really need to look at in relationship to the Avalanche, is that in week 2 you were 9.5 points behind the Avalanche, but after playing them you narrowed that gap to 4.5 points.

A second thing that hampered the cheetah's from week two to three was -1 turnover. 2 more Int's affects your power ranking negatively. Hope this helps clarify your question.

Head to Head is accounted for, depending how well they do after the game you played them. If the Avalanche continue win after this game, this will continue to strengthen the Cheetah's schedule. However if the Avalanche, fall on they're faces from here on out, the Cheetah's SOS is weakened. I could come up with other parameters to use head to head, but that requires some human component to determine the actual strength of the teams. Also with the head to head factor, that implies that I think one team is better than another. What value do I consistently put for head to head. Example:

Cheetah's beat the Avalanche and because of the win and the added performance of that game, they gained 5 points in the overall standings, but they're still be behind. So what happens next. Does Avalanche lose enough points to fall behind Cheetah's or do the Cheetah's get 5 extra points to pass them. That will no longer be a statistical representation of how the team performs Every situation will require a different amount points to overcome the next. There will be no set value.

I am playing around with some formulas to help weight strength of schedule into 4 stages after week 4,8,12,16. I have another game to see how it goes, and I hope I can roll it in before the week 5 games. We'll see.

If your team plays a really tough up front schedule, you'll be hurt by the power rankings, but as the season moves along, if good enough, your teams shall rise to the top.
