Well, here we go again. The season has started and there is a lot of new blood in this conference. It's kind of early to tell who are the teams that are for real and who aren't, but that's what makes the early season so good. Teams with aspirations of the playoffs need to steal an early upset victory against a rival before the momentum of the season starts rolling and the teams have settled in on their strengths. So here we go with Swift's predictions for week 3.
Devonport Devils vs Tasmania Dragons
Devonport has jumped off to a 2 game win streak including a big win in their last game versus DECATUR. Tasmania is just the opposite, dropping 2 in a row. No matter how much I hype it, this isn't a game. In reality, Tasmania doesn't have a chance at a win until game 7 in the Toilet Bowl vs the Redcliffe Sharks. As for this game, the Devils will show the Dragons no mercy. Devonport by 88, 101 - 13.
Sydney Sea Wasps vs Fiji Rage
Sydney is 2-0 and off to a great start. Their defense has been stiffling, only allowing a total of 3 points! Fiji has started 1-1 and want to make a statement this game that they are one of the contenders. The Rage will have to be put up their best defense to keep it close as the Sea Wasps are in a tie for the conference lead in passing. In this one, Sydney will show why they are the pre-season favorite and why Fiji is in the middle of the pack. The Sea Wasps dominate by 28, 31-3.
Apia Evil vs DECATUR STALEYS
Apia is striding high with a 2-0 start. Their offense has really found it's stride and are racking up the points. DECATUR is coming off of two very tough loses to two really good teams. They desperately want to come back and win this game or they'll fall to 0-3. This will definitely be a battle and one of the best games of the day. Who will show that they are a potential top 4 team? This early season matchup of two very even teams is hard to predict, but it will probably come down to who makes a critical turnover. In the end, I think the 'Bastion of Brainpower' known as the STALEYS GM squad will find a way to win by 4, 24-20.
Perth Pirates vs Redcliffe Sharks
The Pirates are flying high and the Sharks have gone belly-up - not much to say about this old rivalry. They have gone different directions; however, in this game they will both be going the same direction - Perth will be going towards Redcliffe's endzone and Redcliffe will be going that direction too! The only sharks in the water will be dead ones. Perth by 81, 87-6.
Rochester Iroquois vs Intergalactic Sub-Mariners
Rochester is forming a raiding part to attack Oceania AA #4 this season and have been very solid so far with a 2-0 start. Intergalactic has rebuilt during the off-season to make a renewed onslaught versus their AA #4 foe. While much improved, the Sub-Mariners cannot compete with the tops of the conference yet and the Iroquois are near the top. Rochester scalps Intergalactic by 32, 38-6.
Samoa Savages vs Komodo Dragons
Samoa is 2-0 and looks good. They had a very good win against the Rage, however, they have benefitted by not having to play one of the top teams yet. Komodo is 1-1, but has to be feeling pretty optimistic as their one loss was a very close match against the Iroquois. Samoa will try to fight for their 3rd win relying on their strong rushing attack, but will find that in AA #4 this season, you can't be one-sided. Komodo moves up the ladder winning their second contest this season, this time by 10, 30-20.
An Album Cover vs Alaska Wild
An Album Cover is 1-1 and is trying to make the jump to 2-1. Alaska is 0-2, although much better than last season. They can score some points and will surprise someone, but they are still weak on defense and will be beaten up on by many teams this season. However, this is one of those games that if their defense can just make a couple stops, they may be able to punch the Album Cover and take home a victory. In the end, I think the Album Cover are the ones who come up with a couple defensive turnovers and take the game by 7, 35-28.
Port Moresby Scallywags vs Waikiki Wrecks
This is going to be an interesting game to see who can say I am a team that you have to watch out for, and who will be the team out watching the playoffs. It's hard to say that for just game 3 of the season, but with a very tough conference this season, this is one of the games that either team must win to have any shot at the playoffs. I'll give Waikiki the edge in this game, but even with this victory, I'm not convinced that they'll make the playoffs - they'll have to convince me. Waikiki by 3, 23-20.
Well, that wraps up game 3. Let the arguing begin, but ultimately, it's not the smack on the forum that matters, it's the smack on the field! Good luck all!
