Power Rankings are computed based on statistical analysis of league results...no thought goes into them what so ever, nor do I use the power ranking generation spreadsheet. I'll publish a new set after each week of games.

That is generous of you but way out leveled so placing us 16th is just too high. Being 8th in Alpha we may finish 10th.

After the first week the power rankings calculators are fairly useless. They don't really pick up until weeks 3-5 because the strength of schedule doesn't have any real data or anything for comparison yet.

The first week it really just looks at PF/PA if I remember right.

What is this based on??? You need to be more specific and detailed if you are going to post rankings. Also where were you all preseason when we talked about doing the rankings?

I am still going to post my rankings but they won't up until after week 3 as you need 3 full weeks for any of the software to work. What you have posted is just your opinion which is fine but certainly not accurate.

Just curious, are you planning on doing the power ranking spreadsheet or the league projector?

Per the original post, "Power Rankings are computed based on statistical analysis of league results". I would actually prefer not to be very specific about the formula used to calculate rankings as I'd like to make changes to it as the season goes on, I will say that it is very much like RPI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratings_Percentage_Index) for NCAA basketball.

So basically I calculate winning percentages for all of the teams, then factor in winning % of the team in question / winning percentage of that team's opponents / winning % of the opponent's opponents, then factors in points scored recently in order to generate a final number to rank teams by.

Writing my rankings program, so that I could deliver rankings on week 1.

You are more than encouraged to post your own rankings...the more people looking at this league the better; at least that's how I feel...an internet search for "nfl power rankings" reveals several different rankings. I'm sensing some hostility / defensiveness in your post, and I'm not really sure why.

Actually, if you'd read my initial post (always a good idea before you reply), you'd know that its not my opinion at all; and that zero human thought has gone into them. They are the result of statistically analyzing the games played by teams in the league.

I'm somewhat curious as to how you could argue their accuracy...I content that seeing as we don't have access to all of the players builds in the league, nor the engine that sims the games / nor the tactics that each team is using....it is impossible for us users to build an accurate ranking of the teams in the league. Hence, we all have to develop our systems for comparing teams...and I would think that as long as they are consistent; any rankings system is as "accurate" as any other.

I'm not going to answer questions / comments about the actual rankings...but this is more of a question about how the rankings are calculated.

Yes, strength of opposition does mean something...unfortunately, at the moment its impossible to determine who the good teams are vs. who the bad teams are. The rankings do take into account numerous winning %s; and really just use points scored to differentiate ties (which is what you see here). As more games get played, things will begin to make more sense.

I anticipate that the good teams will rise to the top...but I just wrote this rankings program while at home for the holidays, so I fully anticipate needing to change something as the season goes on.

Thank you for coming up with this. I think Constantinople will finish a little bit higher than 8th though.

I'd just like to point out that this is a completely statistical analysis. And for those that think they're going to finish higher, all you have to do is win. And just to show that he's being entirely statistical, look where the Pirates are ranked.

I am not complaining, I think this is great data and something to set goals from.
