The Naked Mole Rats are on a three game wining streak and Irish TE Niall Maher has taken time out of his training to speak to me today.
AR: Now Niall I see you have had a part to play in this streak but how do you find the game?
NM: Well to be honest, I believe my contribution had been minimal compared to the other boys on the team. I've found the game a little hard to get used to, as you know I come from a rugby background and the game here is less intense, but with the breaks in the game concentration is a must.
AR: I see so what do you find is the biggest difference?
NM: Well as I said the breaks in play goes against how I play, but the biggest thing is I can't rely on my fitness to make the difference at the end of the day. I mean in rugby as I could just keep running I'd pick the guy who was blowing most to run by, here it isn't as big a factor.
AR: So how do you see this season going for the team and yourself?
NM: Well I believe we have a good team here, and I see big things ahead. But we must keep our heads about us and put the hard yards in. The owner is an absolute legend! He works us hard but, he knows his stuff! *laughs* As for myself, well once I do my bit for the team I'm happy, but I would like to score some TD's but as long as we are winning I'm happy.
AR: So Ireland HUH? How big is the sport there? I believe you are becoming a bit of a celebrity back home!
NM: Ah American Football has been growing in popularity in the last few years, but it has a ways to go what with rugby, football(soccer), hurling, gaelic football all there too. But I can see alot of Irish lads in these leagues in the next few years. And me a celeb!!! Not a chance.
