Yeah, I was bored and didn't have much to do.
The following Interview was conducted by "Congo Gongo Weekly" after the week 9 games.
In this edition, we speak with the Congo Cripplers WR Martin Stokes. He was recently picked up in the offseason. The interview was conducted by Jane Stedfield.
How has your transition gone this season?
I think it's gone fairly well. I have the playbook down at this point in the season, and I've done some good things on offense. Granted, not as much as I'd like, but I take the most out of each and every opportunity I get my hands on the ball.
What's it like playing in Cripplers Crib Stadium?
It's amazing. The fans are great. They're loud, supportive, and they're loyal. It's not about a single player, it's about the whole team. Great atmosphere to play in the stadium, and it's a huge advantage for us when we play at home.
Are you satisfied with your play?
Jane, If I had 1,000 yards and 20 touchdowns at this point in the season, I still wouldn't be satisfied. I'm hungry, but I also know that it's a team game. The minute the game starts to revolve around a single player, it losses it's fun. So, am I satisfied with my personal play? No. I know I can do better and I'm not performing the way that I know I'm capable of. Am I satisfied with the way our team's playing? Definitely. We're 9-0 and handed a previously undefeated team their first loss of the season in the UN Peacekeepers. And just last week beat a very talented and aggressive Monterey Magic. I'm satisfied in that regard.
Are you planning on doing anything differently to improve your play?
Of course. I always try to improve my play, and the play of my teammates. I've been hitting the weights a little more this season, and I've been eating healthier and just going out and practicing. I also try to watch some film outside of the meeting room. I feel that it's helping me understand the opponents defense a little bit more.
Do you think the opposing team is game planning for you? Could that explain your low numbers this season?
It's a possibility. I have been double and triple covered a few times this season, but we have so many weapons, that even if someone is double teamed, that'll leave someone either wide open or with a mismatch in our favor. It works out in the end.
Have the coaches said anything to you about your performance?
Not so much about my personal play, but with the passing game in general. We've struggled a little bit with the pass, but in the last few games, Big Ben [Martinez]has lit up the sky. Earl [Bennett] has also come into his own. I can tell he's real comfortable with the scheme we have on offense and he can just do his thing. To be honest, I'm kind of jealous. I've been thinking too much when I'm out there. I need to get back to the basics.
What do you think about the WR Corps and team in general?
Words can't describe how great they are. The work ethic is there, the comradery is there, and we're like a family. We have great receivers across the board, but we also have a great QB. It's on us as receivers to get open to give Ben some options to go to.
Your team is currently undefeated, any thoughts?
We can't get cocky. We have to gameplan for each team as if they're better than us. Everyone in this locker room wants to go 16-0. We motivate ourselves with that thought. Other teams and coaches will tell you it's hard to motivate an undefeated team because of one reason or another, but not us. We go out there and play our hearts out.
Will you guys make the Championship game?
I hope so. It's looking good so far, but I'm taking it one game at a time. No need to get ahead of ourselves.
Do you plan on coming back next season?
I'd like to, yeah. Nothing official yet though. We'll take care of that in the offseason.
Anything you'd like to say to your fans?
If you have any questions, don't be shy to drop me a line. I'm all ears. You guys make the game fun and enjoyable.
Thus ends our interview with Congo Wide Reciever Martin Stokes. We appreciate his time and we wish him and the Cripplers the best of luck this season.
