The undefeated Chupacabras once again came home and once again expected a party-like atmosphere against the Crete Minotaurs. It was fan appreciation day at Urban Legend Memorial Stadium and the players were firing up the grills and donning their aprons well before kickoff. More than 80,000 Chupacabra fans showed up to the event, a record surpassing any previous fan appreciation days. As Quarterback Ryan Rouse approached a table with a tray full of hot dogs and hamburgers, an "MVP" chant broke out amongst those fans. However, a few tables down another "MVP" chant was starting as Flozell Spears was delivering his food to the table. The campaigning had begun and Ron Ricardo made his case, "I just think that what Rouse has done with so many blowouts is crazy. No other QB in the league has numbers CLOSE to him. He's our leader and captain and deserves to be MVP." However Danny Arulia had another take on his MVP, "Come on man, it's got to be Flozell. It's all about the best player on the best team. We love all our guys but Spears has the stats and so he should have the award." Others like Susan Gonzalez were pretty indifferent, "I really don't know or care who should win MVP. As long as Barcelona wins I'm happy. And this food is delicious too."
But there was a football game played today as well, even if it wasn't a game for very long. Crete came out throw-happy but were unable to finish a drive as Sargent ended the drive with a big sack. Both teams would exchange punts until Barcelona had a groove going. On 4th and goal from the 3 yard line the fans were screaming "GO, GO, GO." Coach C decided to play it safe and kick the field goal and give the Chupacabras an early 3-0 lead.
It turned out to be a good call as the first play of the Crete drive ended when Jackson Law jumped a route and picked off the pass and returned it 20 yards to the Crete 35 yard line. That was plenty close enough for Rouse as he threw a 34 yard strike to Post-Glom and Barcelona led 10-0. Jackson Law said of his interception, "Yeah, the QB never really looked away. He tried to give a little pump fake but I wasn't buying it. My only regret is that I should have booked it to the opposite side of the field because I would have taken it to the house. I knew that our offense would take care of business from there though."
In the 2nd quarter, the running game got into the act as Barcelona took a nice long drive, highlighted by a 27 yard run by Cory Gent and finished off by Flozell Spears. On the next possession, after another extremely long drive Spears found pay dirt and the rout was on. Spears was overly excited on the sidelines, "Whoo, I love getting me six. It never gets old. People ask me if I ever get tired of blowing teams out every week and I say hell no! River City better be ready for us."
On a fan base divided on their choice for MVP, Rouse made it a little more complicated on the next drive as on an all-out blitz Spears was literally left WIDE open without a man withing twenty yards of him and Rouse threw to him for a 23 yard touchdown hook-up. Rouse would add a touchdown pass to Post-Glom again a couple drives later and then starting the 4th quarter, Rouse aired it out to Braeden Collins and he took it to the house for 45 yards. The final in Barcelona: Chupacabras - 72 Minotaurs - 14.
Coach C in post-game press conference, "We knew this one was going to be a party. We hope the fans enjoyed both fan appreciation day and the game. We love our fans. They are crazy, rowdy, loud, enthusiastic and easily the best around. Now comes the time for our real test. River City isn't good. They are great. They are going to give us everything we can handle and we know that. There has been a lot of trash talk between the players, fan bases, etc. But don't mistake that for a lack of respect. We respect the hell out of all of them and can't wait to take the field with them."
When asked about River City's promise to drill him into the ground, Rouse laughed and said, "All my career I've had teams tell me I was going down and they were going to kill me and make me part of the field turf. All my career I've done the same thing...laughed it off and played football. I plan on doing the same this week and I plan on having a great game against a great team."
Game of the year takes place tomorrow ladies and gentlemen. Barcelona Chupacabras (6-0) at River City Ranson (6-0). The winner will have the inside track to the one seed for the playoffs. Hold on people...this one will be physical.
