Found a spread sheet being used around town (created by garrettfoster) so I figured I'd take some of the heat off BD and give people something else to throw stones at.

Here's some info for the calculations:

Definition – This is measure of how good a team is. It rewards beating good teams and punishes for losing to bad teams.

Quality of Play

Quality of Play = (Actual total point differential) - (Predicted total point differential)

Definition – It is essentially how many points (total) that team has beaten (or not beaten) the spread by. I feel it is a good indicator of whether a team is playing better or worse than expected.

What does the "Spread" come from in the second calculation?

Honestly, I'm not sure how that's figured Rube. I'll see if I can't inquire from the creator.

Cool we went from 14 to 11. Holy cow, whatever the spread thing is, we're owning it with over 50

OK, the SPREAD is calculated by a matrix of who beat who and by how much.

So Team A plays Team C. The week before Team B beat Team C by 20 points. Team A and B have a similar Strength of Record, so Team A should beat team C by 20 which is your (SPREAD (or predicted point differential). If they win by more then they will have a "+" QUALITY OF PLAY number. If they win by less or lose, they go "–".

I believe that's how it works.

Also, this system will get more accurate the games that are played. Same reason the BCS doesn't come out until mid-season.

This one probably makes more sense than some of the others out there. I like that first and foremost, who have you played? Then, how have you done? Completely opposite of most others. Very cool. Thanks, man.

I demand a recount! Tucson is clearly #1 in A7.

one thing this really doesnt take into consideration is strength of schedule...ultimately, that balances out, but until the latter stages of the season, it can be very lopsided.

Actually, it does to a certain degree. The strength of record number is directly calculated based on your opponents and the better your opponents are, the better your strength of record is (if you win those games).

The big flaw here is you have to assume the league is competitive for the "spread" numbers to be anywhere near accurate. Reno has played a LOL soft schedule so far and when Reno plays a team like San Antonio or Fresno, do you honestly think they are playing with optimal game strategy? Or do you think that teams take the opportunity to try out new stuff when playing a team that they will beat by 10 TDs even if they just ran a QB draw every play or punted on all 3rd downs. This should be pretty obvious when Reno has a -46, yet are avg'ing > 101 pts/game..LOL

BTW, where can one get a look at the actual spreadsheet?

Not sure I'd call that a "flaw". It's no different than a real world situation where a team plays second stringers for the 3rd QT on, or a coach saves big plays for better competition. No poll or ranking, real life or otherwise, accounts for scrub time and mercy plays.

Spreadsheet can be found here:

right. if you win. which means it doesn't take into consideration if you've played REALLY strong teams, and not won.
