Barcelona came into the season revamped and with high expectations for the season. Team Owner, Big Cowboys Fan, was able to lure a great deal of talent to the Chupacabras with Quarterback Ryan Rouse and Running Back Flozell Spears among the biggest names. Both would play a major role in the first game against the Liverpool Poison.
The Chupacabras opened the season on the road at the Carrier Dome in front of 18,720 fans, with half of them dressed in the black and red of Barcelona. When asked about the crowd, Middle Linebacker Sandy Rocker had this to say, "We have the best fans in all of Europe. To see that many come out and support us on the road makes road games seem a little more like home. We feed off the adrenaline their screams create." The fans would have plenty to cheer about today.
Right from the kickoff the tone was set as the Barcelona D forced the Poison to a 3 and out. Then Flozell Spears had two long runs on the first Chupacabra drive including a 15 yard pitch to get on the board first. Spears would add another TD on their next drive. On the third drive, the fans were getting anxious to see what the new QB could do. Coach Cowboys called Rouse's number on a screen pass at the 8 yard line and El Stankardo broke a few tackles en route to the first regular season TD pass of Rouse's Barcelona career. "It always feels good to get the first one out of the way. We knew we were running the ball a lot going into this game so I knew to be patient and make the most of the throws I was told to make," Rouse said after his first TD pass.
The special teams got into the act in the 2nd quarter as Braeden Collins and Shoes McGee each returned a punt the distance. The game was well in hand when a jailbreak blitz led to the lone score of the game for Liverpool on a 43 yard passing TD. Barcelona would go on to win by a final of 140-7 in a game that could have been a lot worse than it was. Coach Cowboys said about his decision to run the ball over more passing, "I think it was the classy thing to do. We expected to win this game handedly and our passing game was excellent in the scrimmage games. We figured we needed to work on the run game and also it would prevent complete embarrassment. We want to win every game big but we don't believe in rubbing it in. We know we're good and we don't have to rub it in anyone's faces. Rouse will get more chances to throw in the tougher games for sure."
Newly acquired Flozell Spears ran 28 times for 407 yards and 7 TD's and was named the game's Most Valuable Player. Backup running back Cory Gent also carried 14 times for 202 yards and 4 TD's with Stankardo and Allon each added a TD as well.
Ryan Rouse had a good game with limited throwing action completing 14 of 17 passes for 187 yards and 5 touchdowns. He has yet to throw an interception in his Barcelona career including the pre-season. Rouse's numbers if you combine the pre-season are: 50/73, 69% completion percentage, 683 yards, 13 TD, and 0 INT with a QB rating nearing 140. Lifelong Chupacabra fan, Ron Ricardo who made the trip from Barcelona to see that game had this to say, "Oh WOW!! You know, I thought this team couldn't get more exciting or fun to watch until this season. Coach Cowboys is the best owner and coach in the league by far. He always gives us a hell of a team to watch and this is the best by far! I was screaming the whole game. Flozell is a monster and Rouse is the greatest QB I've ever seen play. Our offense is going to be unstoppable. Our line is huge, they won't give up a sack and the receivers are athletic and speedy. I can't wait until game 2 when our boys come home to play the Stalkers! I'll be there in the front row with my new #12 Rouse jersey on! GO CHUPACABRAS!!!"
The excitement is building around this team both in the locker room and with the fan base. Other teams are taking notice of Barcelona and you know the Chernobli Stalkers will not be looking forward to game #2 on their schedule. Next game will be November 14th at 10:00 AM EST. Chernobli Stalkers (0-1) at Barcelona Chupacabras (1-0)
