As the FA madness gets into full swing I wanted to add a little perspective to the player search that all owners dread.
At the beginning of this season I felt Honolulu's WR group was our biggest weakness. The WRs (and Dline) were entering the season in a position where they'd be below level 32 for at least 3/4ths of the year, which looked dangerous in this league. It was no secret on our team after losing our #1 WR last off-season I was worried. I felt a great deal of pressure to replace that #1 WR before this season started, especially since we were moving up a league.
But, unlike the season before when we lost our #1 and #2 WR, I decided not recruit over anybody. The #3-5 guys had been selfless backups since Season 2 and they were really hungry to prove they could get the job done. So, I put my faith in them and our #2 from last season. In the end it worked out really well because they were all the #2 (shit). We had 3 WRs with over 1,000 yards and our 4th guy missed it by 99.5 yards.
The lesson is, before you succumb to the pressure to recruit over your guys this off-season for a high level merc, give your faithful backups the chance they deserve to prove themselves. I've always tried to stick with my guys, but we were in a pinch at WR after last season. Now I'm really glad I didn't bring anybody in. So, if you've got a guy who has been a faithful backup, worked on their player's build, spent their money boosting, and kept the board active, then I think you've found a great starter.
Best of luck on your quest to fill open roster spots.
