As a group of scholars and renaissance men, the Tasmanian Devils would like for you to become a positive force for change in the world and consider changing your mascot.

Kraut–noun
1. (often initial capital letter) Slang: Disparaging and Offensive. a German, esp. a German soldier during World War I or World War II.

Although once used commonly along with other slurs, disparaging connotations such as this one serve to repress and generalize a proud people who have much to offer society.

Won't you join with us and make a statement for all man kind by changing your team name to something more tolerant?

Some suggestions that come to mind are:

1. The Illesheim Snow Covered Birches
2. The Illesheim Stretchy Lederhosen (or liederholzen)
3. The Illesheim Collectable Beer Steins

I'm sure there are many others to consider that would give a better representation of the overall flavor of the region and give the citizens of Illesheim something to rally behind and be proud of.

Are you serious?!? I think you're joking, but just in case...

1. We are a group of soldiers stationed in Germany. We all have German friends and work hand-in-hand with the Germans every day.

2. Half of our guys have married German girls.

3. We have children born in Germany who are now German citizens.

The Germans I've been lucky enough to work with don't mind the term 'Kraut'. We rib each other every day. That being said, I probably wouldn't walk up to a stranger and call him or her a Kraut...since they don't know me it could be interpreted in a negative manner.

I realize that some Americans can be a little oversensitive toward words. Perhaps it's my Army culture, but we (different races of soldiers) call each other 'cracker', 'nigger', etc., all the time and nobody cares. We think it's funny because we're not ultra-sensitive.

If my history is correct that's just the sort of thing that fueled the rise of the Nazi's

If you're referring to racism and a general lack of tolerance, you are certainly correct. The Nazi's prospered due to ignorance.

If a team made up of Germans called themselves the American Yanks, I would not be the least bit offended.

We are not racist and we absolutely love the Germans, their culture, and their beautiful country. Most of us would stay in Germany if the Army let us. We certainly do not intend the word 'Kraut' to be negative or derogatory.

Update 9:49 cst:

Just got out of a meeting with our PR department. Evidently they received an angry call from Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law Center. They are planning a large demonstration outside the gates of our stadium tomorrow.

No offence JC but I think a team owner can call their team what they wish and speaking as an OC for a team in their league I can say 100% that the members of the Krauts team are not intending it to be racist, its just a name.
