Season 5 is set to kick off in about 15 hours, so I thought it'd be a good time to take a look at some interesting week 1 matchups.
Alpha Conference
Berlin Wall Crushers v. Judah Lions :: Judah was one of the hottest teams in all of WEA2 the second half of last season. They've undoubtedly thoughts of continuing that success to the title game this season. They get an early test with A2 vets, the Wall Crushers. Berlin looks like a playoff team right now, so we'll see what they do against one of the Alpha favorites.
Amsterdam Fire v. Barcelona Bulls :: Can't talk about favorites without mentioning the Fire (no matter how often we try
), and they start the season against another team that looks like it's bound for the playoffs in Barcelona.
Zurich Gnomes v. Liverpool Scousers :: It's the stingy Scouser defense against those scrappy Gnomes in week 1. We may have to call this one 'The Battle of the Coolest Mascots'.
Zeta Conference
Rockaway Knights v. Mali Mystics :: The Knights are my early sleeper pick coming off a disappointing showing last season where they failed to make the playoffs. I think they're going to be a team to be reckoned with this season, and looking down their lineup, they appear to be ready for the challenge. After some recruiting broo-haha, the Mystics are ready to just get on the field and play some ball.
Barcelona Bandits v. Eindhoven Breakers :: The Zeta newcomer gets a chance in week 1 to show what they're made of. The Breakers finished strong last season with a hard-nosed, smash-mouth style of football, leaning heavily on their hard-running backs and a tenacious defense. The fans in Eindhoven want a championship this season, and their team is looking to deliver.
Camelot Kings v. Rome Bulls :: Those that have been around A2 since the beginning are certainly familiar with these two teams. Playoff appearances in each of their first two seasons, these teams know how to win. It looks like the toughest game to call this week.
