1. Edinburgh Black Knights (16-0) vs. 5. Schiffertown Griffin’s (12-4)
At the start of the season I expected these two teams to be vying for the conference championship. Instead, they’re vying for a chance at the conference championship. That makes it no less a great game to watch, though, as a revitalized Schiffertown heads into Edinburgh to avenge their only loss of the second half of the season. In fact, the Knights handed the Griff’s their only loss of the season in which they failed to score a touchdown. Both teams came at the other with a balanced attack, but Edinburgh got up early and was able to outlast Schiffertown down the stretch. It’ll be interesting to see which side makes the adjustments necessary to move on to the next round. I know, for my part, that the Knights are taking no one lightly this postseason.
2. Icelandic Vikings (13-3) vs. 6. Trillville Hoods (10-6)
Two of the top offenses in Zeta go at it in this matchup. Trillville put together some good drives and forced some timely turnovers in their win over Glasgow. Their defense will have to come up big a second straight week, because Iceland’s big uglies will be lining up across the neutral zone all day tomorrow, and they’ve allowed the Vikings to run a powerful balanced attack that scored 639 points, good for 4th in WEA#1 and second in Zeta. The first time these two met, Iceland took advantage of Trillville’s struggling secondary, passing for 318 yards and 3 TD’s with an amazing 10.3 yards/attempt. The Hoods challenged the Vikes’ D with a controlled passing game coupled with heavy doses of Westbrook, but they may have to be more aggressive to keep up with their opponent’s high-powered offense. I fully expect to see a shootout in this game.
